red mail Kenworthy family that moved to the US - (New Mill - Yorkshire, West Riding)
Greetings: I'm looking for any information that anyone may have related to the UK wing of my family, the KENWORTHY's. My ancestor, Lazarus Kenworthy was born in New Mill in 1821, and christened in Saddleworth in 1822. In October of 1828, he took a ship from Liverpool to New York with his mother, Mary, and brothers: John, Samuel, George, and James. I believe their father's name was James. I've tracked the brothers from the Liverpool docks to New York to Canada to Michigan, and have a decent history of their adventures here in the US, but I have nothing related to their lives prior to reaching New York. If any of the above sounds familiar, please let me know! I would love to know what happened to James Sr, as well as to track his wife's family (I have no maiden name). Thanks so much! Berni in Los Angeles
red mail Little Wonder - 1905 - (New Park - Yorkshire, West Riding)
Harrogate Herald - 8th February 1905. (A small extract from the Wednesday Gossip column.) I had not been to "Little Wonder", or New Park as it is now called, for some time. I was amazed to find on the brow of Ripon Road there is such a nice colony. Harrogate will soon start where Killinghall leaves off. The gasometers which once appeared in isolation now seem out of place amongst these new terraces. The corner near the inn appeared to have been widened by the removal of an old obstruction, so that the road leading up to Bilton has a spacious beginning. The fine school building on the hill climbs skywards impressively, and helps to fill what was once a gap. I am told there is a good deal of "artillery" practice going on in connection with the sewage "outfall", with which some of the residents are inclined to "fall out". However they will probably "fall in" with the march of improvements. (The "Little Wonder" pub on the Skipton Road/Ripon Road crossroads was burnt down earlier this month (October 2002) - Can anyone tell me about this pub or has any recollections of it..?)
