Sarah Ellis - (Carlton near Rothwell - Yorkshire, West Riding)
Hoping that someone has definitive information on Sarah ELLIS, born 1858/59 Carlton, West Yorkshire. She went on to marry a Tom SEFTON, Dec.22nd, 1877 at Lofthouse Parish Church, and I have picked her up in Census from 1881. The gap I have is census info. for 1861 and 1871, and details of her exact DOB and her parents. I have an entry for 1861 which shows her aged 2, G/Daughter to the head of the house, who is Joseph ELLIS, age 46, and his wife Mary, also age 46. Also present on the census is a Mary Elizabeth BROWN,age 20 Joseph's daughter, and her husband Ralph age 25. Other enquiries have suggested that Sarah may be the daughter of Mary Elizabeth Ellis, born before her marriage to Ralph,....could be, because the 1871 shows the same G/Parents with a Sarah Brown, now age 12, which would seem that she had been 'adopted', formally or otherwise, by Ralph Brown and his wife. However, on her marriage certificate her name reverts to Sarah Ellis, with no details of her father shown. If anyone out there can clarify any of this, I would be very appreciated. Thanks

red mail Timothy Brown and family - (Carlton - Yorkshire, West Riding)
I'm looking for a link between the family of Timothy Brown (born Carlton near Rothwell c1798). I have just acquired my "family" bible and it refers to a Timothy Brown born in Carlton near Rothwell in the late 1700's. He died in 1871 aged 73.He had a son called Timothy (b1845) who married a girl called Emma Smith on 17th November 1862. They had a host of children including William (Smith) born 1860, George Brown born 1863, Tom born 1864, Ada Elizabeth born 1866, Joe born 1868, John born 1870, Ada born 1872, Mary born 1874, Nancy born 1877, Louisa born 1879. The bible has recently found its way to me and, having researched my family for over a year I have now bgun to seek a Brown/Stead link but without success. I suspect a marriage in the latter part of the 18th century saw the bible passed to the Steads but as yet my research has been fruitless. Can anyone help please? Thanks. Paul

red mail cattal Village - (Cattal - Yorkshire, West Riding)
Cattal was called cattall and the great (magna) Manor of Cattall and Cattall Parva. In Saxon time it was called Cathale but as all good yorkshire men drop the "H" Cathale became Catale until some idiot changed the last "e" into an "L" making it Catall. Some stuttering chap then added another "T" to make it Cattall. Fron 89 AD when the romans built a crossing here over the River Nidd on the Tadcaster to Ripon Road (called "The Eboricum by pass") the village was called ????.. so who is really good at history??? What was it called from 89AD to saxon times when it became "Cathale"

red mail Grace Clifford from Cowcliffe - (Cowcliffe - Yorkshire, West Riding)
Someone with the name of Grace Clifford (Clifferd as some who have transposed the name). I found Grace as the mother of one Thomas Radcliff who was born at the end of 1804 and baptised at the beginning of 1805. This birth date was important - he emigrated to the USA in the late 1840s, and later US Federal Census records show him as being born in 1804. That leaves me sure that his parents were John Radcliffe and Grace Clifford (or Clifferd). It is clear that Grace had several children, and probably did not survive to the 1841 Census. I think Grace was born around 1785 and may have died in the 1830s. The youngest child was born at about 1831. Now the Radcliffe family grouping, and marriages of their offspring were concentrated around some of the villages which were then suburbs of Huddersfield but are now fully part of the town; but there is something strange, in that I cannot find any evidence of Graces birth as a Clifford, not of her death as a Radcliff. Can anyone help, please?

My Grandfather was Charles Edward Spooner.1867-1949. He married Edie Evans of Keynsham 1871-1953. His sister, Martha, married Harry Nadin, 1875-1940.I think Harry`s father was John Edwin Nadin, 1852-1927. Harry ran the company "J.E.Nadin and son" from Western rd. They had no children but appeared to treat my father Joseph Evans Spooner as a son.He lived in Calgary, Canada for some years with them from abou 1914.I am particularly interested in Harry Nadin. red mail BENNETT - (Darnall - Yorkshire, West Riding)
red mail CAWTHORNE - (Darnall - Yorkshire, West Riding)
I am researching my biological Cawthorne familiy. So far I have George Cawthorne b. 1823 Darfield, Barnsley, Yorkshire, a blacksmith, as was his father Stephen Cawthorne. George was married to Elizabeth Wilson and then Elizabeth Blenkhorne. Children for George and Elizabeth Wilson were Anne Maria b 1848 at Barnsley;Frederick b 1849 at Barnsley; Wilson Cawthorne b 1851 Barnsley, d. 1876 Sheffield; Sophia Cawthorne b 1852 Hackenthorpe, Derbyshire ( who married David Wright in 1873 and emigrated to Australia with their children). George Cawthorne b 1856, James Cawthorne (my biological grt.grandad)b 1857 Catcliffe, Sheffield and Randal Cawthorne b 1858 Catcliffe, Sheffield. Child of George and Elizabeth Blenkhorne was Ernest Stephen b 1871 Sheffield. When Sophia married David Wright at Darnall Parish Church, Sheffield on 27 Feb 1873 there were two witnesses; Hannah Wright who I think was Davids sister and the other witness was William Cawthorne. Now, I have tried to find a William sibling for Sophia but no joy. Perhaps it was a cousin so I have tried to find uncles for Sophia with no luck. Can anyone help. Ideally I would like to find all the children for Stephen Cawthorne who would probably be born in Darfield, Barnsley. This would then give me the aunts and uncles for Sophia and therefore cousins too. Thanks
red mail Cawthorne update - (Darnall - Yorkshire, West Riding)
I now have more details for my Cawthornes. My grt.grt grandad George Cawthorne b. 1823 parents were Stephen Cawthorne b 1791 South Kirby and Maria Woffendale c.1799 Wath. They had at least two more children James b.1817 Darfield, Barnsley and Stephen b.1818 Darfield Barnsley. There is a big gap (for those times) between Stephen and George so there was possibly more children. Any ideas????
