James Marsh (Builder)
I am researching the history of my house in Dronfield. The house was built by James Marsh and Son (Builders) Ltd. James was born in 1888 in Wadshelf, Derbyshire. In 1911 he was living on Toftwood Road, Crookes with his wife Sarah. In 1939 they were living at 147 Norton Lane. James Marsh built the houses 2 - 24 Marsh Avenue in Dronfield in the late 1930's and also some houses on Snape Hill. He also built The Pines nearby and lived in this house from 1940 - 1945. I would love to contact any descendants or people who knew James. Also land adjacent to Marsh Avenue was owned by William Prestwich who originated from the Manchester area but lived in Dronfield until his death in about 1954. I would love to make contact with descendants or opeople who may remember him. Many thanks, Ken

red mail DAVAGE or DAVIDGE in Sheffield
I have been told that John DAVEG married Dinah HATTERSLEY in Ecclesfield, Yorkshire on 25th March 1788. I am unable to find this marriage online. They baptised their first child Dinah DAVIG (sic) 24 Mar 1788 in Ecclesfield one day before that marriage supposedly took place. Dinah HATTERSLEY was christened at Ecclesfield on 6th February 1763, and her father was Jonathan HATTERSLEY. Their next child a William DAVIDGE was baptised 4 Jul 1790 in Ringley, Lancashire, parents John & Diana DAVIDGE. Why? He turns up in Sheffield marrying a woman named Ruth c. 1820. Ruth says she was born Owlerton. I cannot find this marriage either. William & Ruth DAVAGE baptised son George 13 Oct 1822 at Sheffield Cathedral and at that time were living in Wadsley Bridge. They already had a son John c. 1821 whose baptism I cannot find. Except for William, all their children were baptised as DAVAGE but in the 1841 Census the family is listed as DAVIES. Following this family forward they eventually revert to the more common spelling of the surname DAVIDGE. The men all seem to be involved in the steel industry, primarily a forgemen, so may have been illiterate. Is anyone else researching this family? I have many John DAVIDGE's (various spellings) that could be the man who married Dinah, but I need help to sort out which one. Nancy, Canada

James Edmund Whitehead
James Edmund 1st appears on the 1841 census in Salford with his father, Edmund, stepmother and half sister. I can track him forward on the censuses - living mainly in Hulme (now part of Greater Manchester) on the censuses to 1891, working as a house painter and/or paper hanger. He dies in Hulme in 1893. James Edmund was born around 1833 and, according to the censuses, in Sheffield. I'm trying to find his baptism and the marriage of his parents. I've no idea of his mother's name. His father Edmund was born in Ainsworth, Lancashire around 1810 and is described variously as a clerk, auctioneer's clerk, book keeper, woollen draper. I know he married the boy's stepmother in February 1839 in Eccles so James Edmund's mother must have died by then. Edmund's own father, James, was apparently a calico printer. Is anyone searching for this boy or has come across him? Any clues would be useful.

red mail Fletcher Frankish Grainger
My Great Grandmother was Hannah Grainger and was born in Clifton, York in 1885.Parents Charles and Martha. In 1911 she was a servant for the Nelson family in the Manor House, Heworth, York. The Head of the house was Martha Nelson a widow age 78, her daughter Gertrude 45, Son Frederick Oswald 44 and daughter Blanch 33; all single, Frederick was a cashier with the London Joint Stock Bank. My Great Grandfather Francis William Frankish also worked as a servant there. He was a groom and a gardener and 10 years older than Hannah. At the time of the census they were listed as single, but they soon married as Hannah was pregnant with my Grandfather William Henry Frankish. Sometime between 1911 and 1914 they moved to Sheffield where they had 2 more children Emily in 1914 and Harry in 1921. In 1926 Francis William Frankish died. In 1933 Hannah re-married, she had been boarding/ lodging with Thomas Fletcher and they eventually married. My mother knew Hannah as "Grandma Fletcher" My main Interest is to find out anything about Thomas Fletcher; other than his name, their date of marriage and living in Sheffield I know nothing. There is a possibility that he had been married before and might have had a son called Nelson (or Nelson maybe a middle name) (alternatively the name Nelson we have could refer to the family Hannah worked for)). Anything about Thomas Fletcher and Hannah Frankish nee Grainger would be most helpful I know it's not a lot to go on. Hannah died in 1957 (ish) maybe later. My lesser interest is to know anything about her time with the Nelson family in the manor house with my Great Grandfather.
red mail Sarah Ellen Gomersall/Walker
I am struggling to flesh out the life of my Great Great Grandmother, Sarah Ellen Gomersall nee Walker and would be very grateful if anyone can help. She was born in Goldsborough, Knaresborough in 1844, married Samuel Gomersall,a silversmith in Sheffield, in 1873 and they lived in Sheffield. He died in 1880 and she and her son, Frederick Walker Gomersall moved to Manningham, Bradford by the 1881 census. The last trace I have of her before her death in 1926 in Wetherby, is 1891, when she still lived in Bradford. I know she never apparently re-married but I can find no trace of her anywhere in the 1901 or 1911 census. I am very keen to find out what she was doing during that period as I am positive she did not remain in Bradford. There is a chance she returned to SHeffield, though I have not found proof in the censuses. Any help gratefully received.
red mail James and Sarah Mitchell
I am looking for information about James and Sarah Mitchell living in Sheffield in the late 19th early 20th century. The had a daughter Elizabeth b1889 - no other children. James was born 1860 in Sowerby Bridge, Halifax, lived in Keighley and by 1891 was living in Sheffield. He died in either 1915 or 1917 in Sheffield. Sarah outlived him - I think she lived until 1935. I am looking for information about descendants of James, Sarah and Elizabeth. There are several possibilities for Elizabeth's marriage as Mitchell a very common name in Sheffield. She was still single and living at home in the 1911 census. Does anyone know about this family or are related to them?

Post (my grandfather) was born in Sheffield in 1922. If my details are correct there were 2 other children who survived infancy, Amy (b. 1897, m.1922 to Joseph Glew, children John F. (b.1925) and Edward (b.1927)) and Cyril (b.1901, m.1927 to Grace Smith, children Barbara (b.1934) and David C.W. (b.1939)) John Herbert Senior fought in WWI; his son John H. fought in WWII and came to Canada where he met and married my grandmother. Returned to Sheffield in 1948 (?) alone, and family here in Canada have not heard from him since.
Elizabeth Smedley of Sheffield. Born 1867. Parents William Henry Smedley and Elizabeth Rockett Smedley, nee Shaw. On the 1881 census Elizabeth, age 14, is living with her father and his second wife, Ellen, at 14 Princess St. Brightside, Sheffield. I have details of the family, 1809 to present day but, having checked marriages and deaths, I have nothing after 1881 for Elizabeth. Assuming Elizabeth did marry and has descendants, I would be very pleased to hear from the family.

red mail Joseph Lodge, Ecclesall Bierlow
Joseph Lodge married Emily Pigg from Bishop Aukland, Durham, in Ecclesall Bierlow in June 1876. Joseph was a Master Tiler who worked in the building trade, high up on rooves. They had a child, John William Marriott Lodge, born at 52 Glover Street in 1879. The family is recorded in the 1881 census as living at 40 Broadfield Park Road but nothing after that. The death of a Joseph Lodge was registered in 1883 in Ecclesall Bierlow but the age does not match. This Joseph was 25 but our Joseph would have been 32-33 years old. Does anyone have information on this family or their movements ? Joseph's occupation required him to travel to work sites outside of the area. I am willing to share information.

red mail George Blackshaw b 1819 ish
He was my 3rd Great Grandfather, but I can't find anything about his parentage. According to the 1841 census, he was born in Yorkshire. He married Mary Ann Downes in 1840 (he was 21), but his marriage certificate leaves his father's name blank. I haven't been able to find any evidence of his baptism in Sheffield, but of course, he could have been born elsewhere in Yorkshire. He was a grinder, living in Charlotte Street (1840), Morpeth Street (1841) & Bailey Street (1842). He died aged just 24 of Consumption in Chapel Street, Brightside Bierlow. Does anyone have any idea how I could find out anything else.
