red mail Ripon/ Leeds Spence
Hi I am researching my Granddad Thomas Spence who was born in Ripon in the 1880's. I know he moved to Leeds with parents Jane Blackburn and James Spence and married my grandma Sarah Ellen Goodyear Britain, born 1890, They lived in Holbeck Leeds and later moved when the house was pulled down. They had several children I would like to trace. I know his grandparents were Sarah Lambert and The first James Spence of Ripon. He had an uncle who was game keeper at Studley Royal estate and another uncle who was one time Mayor of Ripon named John Spence. I know too that his grandma Sarah Lambert was believed related to the Stricklands of Sizergh Castle Cumberland and also General John Lambert of Civil war fame. If anyone else out there is researching Thomas and may be my cousin I would love to hear from you and share information if you have any on above family. Thank you. Carol

In the 1851 census for Billingham, Joseph's age is given as 46 (ie born c1805) and his birthplace as Ripon. All attempts so far to find his baptism in and around Ripon have drawn a blank, so I'm starting to wonder if he actually came from Ripponden in WRY. Joseph's occupation is variously (but fairly consistently) given as 'brewer's labourer', 'malt-maker' or 'brewer'. He died in 1855 at Stockton from heart disease. Does anyone recognise Joseph pls?
