She went by Nellie. Not sure if this was short for anything. She lived at 113 Canterbury Crescent, Boothtown Halifax. She was born in 1888.Don't know if this was her maiden or Married name. Suspect married name. She was a friend or relative of my mother's family. We always just called her auntie Nellie. I have letters from her to my mom and some are signed Nellie and some are signed Mrs N Newsome. My mother was Margaret Eveline Newsome. Her mom and dad were Eveline and James E Newsome. He married Edith elizabeth spratt 7/2/1923 in Portsmouth and had three children. My father was Arnold born 31/1/1926. He died on 26/4/1944 in Hampshire. On the 17/8/1942 he bigamously married Ella Kate ridout at Portsmouth registers office and had two children.

William Herbert Newsome
William Herbert NEWSOME He lived in Halifax. Born in 1886 and died in 1918 in the war in France. When he was 25 he is listed in the census as being Married. I can not find any evidence that he had a wife . He was my gfather's brother. His parents were James and Eliza Ellen Newsome. In his will he leaves his effects to an Emma Constance Andrews who is the wife of John Andrews. Not sure why he didn't leave it to his family members and don't know who she actually is. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I am searching for Janet M Lumsden who was born in Halifax on 6/8/41 - mother's maiden name was Grigg. Interested to hear from anyone who may know her whereabouts.
My great grandmother was Eliza Ellen Newsome (nee Nicholl) she was born August 13 1865 in Halifax. I can not find any info on her before she married James Newsome in 1885. I know her father was Thomas Nicholl a mechanic born in 1842. He may have lived in Cross field. I have his father as Joseph Nicholl , married to Sarah Holt but this could be wrong. If you have any info such as who was Thomas married to and did they have other children besides Eliza it would be very helpful in filling this gap.

1861 census for John Horkan of Ovenden (Mayo birth) shows he has a "missing" wife. On the 1871 census he is now a widower and his daughter Maria has left home. I have trolled thru all the death records held in Halifax with no success. Does anyone know how to find the hospital entries which could hold the answer. As for daughter Maria I cannot find a wedding entry to explain her absence and doubt they would have reurned to Ireland. Grateful for any help john

Looking for information on the family associated with RAWDON COCKROFT I believe his mothers maiden name was MOWBRAY and that he was born in Halifax in 1912. He married Winifred THOMAS in 1941, I don't think that they had children and it looks as if Rawdon died in Halifax in 1975 and Winifred possibly died in Halifax in 1984. The link that I am interested in is that of Winifred (formerly THOMAS born in 1917) parents or siblings, her mother may have been Mary Ann O'DOWD (born in 1888 in Wolverhampton and possibly died in Lichfield in 1969 (as Mary Ann THOMAS). Can anyone help me? My ancestor was Humphrey Dyson, born circa 1815 in Halifax. He married Alice Leddon who died, then Elizabeth Henshaw, who also died and then Jane Partington, and they moved to the Manchester area. My Holdsworth family were from Holbeck and then lived in Halifax from 1851, they were a large family named Edward Lawson And Mary Ann (parents)children Sarah Ann 1846, Mary 1849, John Mathew 1851 (My grandfather) William Lawson 1854, Susannah 1858, Emma 1862, Margaret 1865, I'v traced most of them up to the 1911 census except for Mary. My grandfather John Mathew moved to Southport Lancashire by the 1901 census with children Mary1881, Maurice1884, William1885, Annie1894 and my father Edward born 1885 who passed away in 1967, William went away around 1911 and never contacted the family, he married Minni Bastow in 1908 in Ormskirk and had a doughter Gladis Phillis, I'm stuck here and I'm hoping someone might have him as an ancestor. Trying to trace any relatives of my father (now deceased) Daniel Francis Marshall born 1909 in South Street Halifax. I only have his birth certificate to work with and know very little about his relatives. His father was William Marshall His mother was Margaret Smith I can find no trace of marriage/birth/or death of either parents. Hi Hi I am looking for help in filling in some big Gaps of My Great Grandfather Fred Gartland life. Fred (or Frederick) was born in the Workhouse in Halifax UK on the 19th April 1890, his mothers name was Eliza Gartland (Father unknown). Eliza Family is as follows: Her father was John Gartland who is believed to have been born around the 1833 to 1838 in Drogheda Ireland. In the 1871 census I find him in Stalybridge Lancashire UK married to a Theresa but unfortunately I can not find him anywhere before this date or anywhere after 1891. His children are Eliza Born 1872 Lancashire, Matthew Born 1874, Tom Born 1876, Mary Anne(annie) Born 1878, Fanny & Helen (or Ellen) Born 1881, Alice & Kate Born 1883, Sarah Born 1884, John Born 1886 all in Halifax. It is our belief that Eliza Gartland married an Ernest Lawton not long after having Fred and in the 1901 census we have found Ernest and Eliza living in 266 Hanson Lane Pellon Halifax with Fred aged 10, His Uncle Tom Gartland and Uncle Mathew Gartland and his step brothers and sisters Winifred Born c 1900, Edward Born c1898, Elisa Born c1895. In apprx 1942 he left home one day and never returned to the Family, his Wife Dora Gartland (maiden name Allinson) and his children Selwyn and Elga Moved to Australia and his daughter Sheila (who married Paul Todd) moved to New Zealand. Just before his death 9th October 1974 Fred (Frederick) lived in 220 Arlington Road, Arlington House Camden. Our Challenge has come in 1 Tracking down what life Fred lived between 1942 to 1974 2 Any information on Eliza Family especially her Father John Gartland from Ireland 3 Any information after 1901 of Ernest and Eliza and there children Winifred, Edward and Elisa Any information, no matter how little or large, would be accepted with great gratitude. Lavin family search...from 1880 after and before if anyone has any information!. Thomas Lavin born in Ireland ended up in Halifax, marrying a Mary Higgins and having 4 children. Ambrose, Catherine, margaret and james. I believe Thomas' father was called John Lavin but whether he came to England with his son Thomas i dont know! Ambrose emigrated to philadelphia usa. margaret died at the age of 25.

Thomas Hamilton was born in Johnstone Renfrew 1865. He was enlisted in the Light Infantry, Royal Marine Corps in 1881 and 1891. He married Catherine Cocking. It appears they may have separated before his death which would have been between 1919 and 1927. I am particularly interested in tracing the record of where and how he died. There have been reports that he died in Halifax, but I don't know if this was West Riding, YOrkshire or Canada.

The 1901 census show John his wife Alice Ann, duaghter Asenath (sic) son James and Moses THOMPSON residing at 5 Preston Place, Halifax. Moses was the manager of a Woolen Mill in Sowerbybridge in the 1880's and 1890's.
