red mail Can you help solve a nearly 90 year old mystery and find my Mum's biological father?
Can you help solve a nearly 90 year old mystery and find my Mum's biological father? Sadly Grandma never told us. His name isn't mentioned on the birth certificate and I haven't found a baptism. Mum was born Shirley Betty Moorhouse to Jessie Moorhouse in 1931 in a fish and chip shop in Scarborough Yorkshire. Jessie's family moved from Grimethorpe, Barnsley to Scarborough in 1925. Jessie had carefully stashed some precious memories with photos and fragments of torn letters in a large envelope concealed in a false bottom to her laundry basket. These were only discovered when the house was being cleared after her death. Jessie was in Cudworth (next village to Grimethorpe) dated 1930-31 when Mum was conceived. The letters were signed "Jim" but no other address or details. There are several photos of him with Jessie, and her sister Edith and possibly Jim's family and with her in Blackpool in 1929. He could be Jim or James and a conversation years ago with Jessie's brother who said he thought Jim might have left to join the police or military services. Jessie was a fun-loving party girl who went to the Methodist Church in Cudworth and played the organ there occasionally. I would really appreciate if you suggest some ways forward?
Gayler or Gaylor death 1889
I'm hoping someone local can help with this curious puzzle. I'm an amateur local history researcher in Hertfordshire. In our churchyard we have a Gayler family grave that (amongst other entries) includes the fact that a son - Maple Gayler - died on 9 July 1889 (aged 30) and is "interred in Barnsley cemetery". The unusual first name of "Maple" was a maiden name that had been handed down to this boy. Looking online I have found the inquest report for someone called "Henry Gayler" (sometimes "Gaylor") who died after accidentally shooting himself. The witness at the inquest was a neighbour who saw the accident, and she admitted she didn't really know him. The back-story she gave about him (which she said he'd told her) was completely wrong, giving the incorrect occupation and location for his family. Nevertheless, it does seem that "Henry" must be "Maple", as the date of death is exactly right. But since Maple's parents obviously found out he'd died, and knew the exact date, in order to include him on the gravestone, I wonder why his first name hasn't been corrected somewhere. I don't know if he has a stone in Barnsley cemetery, in which case that could provide more informaton? But his family were not rich, so probably couldn't afford that. If anyone looks up the inquest (original note books on Ancestry UK) you will see that the neighbour said his age was "he looked about 30", so I think it a coincidence that the correct age was in fact recorded, because he WAS 30. Any help or advice from a local person would be most gratefully received. Thank you.

red mail Mary Ellen (nee Jackson) Smith
Have been looking for birth and parentage info for my great-great-grandma, Mary Ellen Jackson. According to a little date book that my great-grandma kept, her birth date was June 3, 1855. However, I have not been able to find her birth certificate through Genes Reunited or the General Records Office. The main reason for this, I think, is her birthplace varied each decade on the censuses. She used one of these three: Barnsley (most often), Rotherham, or Wakefield. I have attempted at ordering her birth certificate -- failing 7 times! There aren't any more left to try in the three places I mentioned. Another wrinkle is on her marriage certificate to Robert Smith of Wakefield, the box that should have her father's name in it, just has a line through it, and no mention of who her mother was (instead). They had these children: Amy, Sarah, Alice, Ernest Arthur, Harry, Edith, and Florence. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Kate

red mail Bailey/Lewis
I am looking for a Thomas Archibald Bailey Lewis, who married my great-aunt in 1919. I have been unable to find his birth, but have found the birth cert of Thomas Archibald Bailey, born 10 Jan 1898 in Wakefield Prison, son of Edith Agnes Bailey of 5 Brunswick Terr, Dodsworth Rd, Barnsley & Thomas George Bailey, who was a Sanitary Painter (Master). Since I found on the newly released 1911 census a Thomas Archibald Lewis born c 1898 (born Barnsley)living with Richard & Annie Elizabeth Lewis (& also found them on 1901 census living in Normanton, Wakefield, my feeling is that Thomas Archibald Bailey was adopted by them & thereafter used the surname Lewis. I found evidence on 1901 census of a George Bailey (his biological father?)in Sheffield Asylum & listed as a Painter Labourer. What if Thomas Archibald Bailey was born whilst his mother was in prison as an inmate or visiting her inmate husband - as a lunatic, the father was later transferred to Sheffield (his home town) & the hapless infant was put up for adoption. Does anybody know any more or how I can trace this information if true? Thank you.

red mail Heeley in Barnsley, Gawber, Higham, Dodworth areas
I am looking for information about the family of my Great Grandmother Mary Heeley. Mary was b 6.6.1892 at Dodworth, and appears to be the youngest daughter out of 5 born to George Heeley and his wife Eliza Jane (nee Bradley). George and Eliza were married on Xmas day at Darton Parish Church 1880. They appear to have at least 5 daughters, Jane (1881) Annie (1885) Amy (1887) Eliza (1890) and Mary (1892). I have found birth certs for all but Annie (who appears aged 6 on the 1891 census where the family were living at Woodvale Cottages in Dodworth. I am trying to find a birth or baptism record for Annie (I suspect this could be a pet name or variation). If anyone has any info or could do a look up that would be excellent. I am also trying to find out if George and Eliza Jane had another child between Jane and Annie and after Mary as there is a reasonable gap between the 2 older girls. Perhaps the children died in infancy and would not have shown up on 1891 or 1901 censuses. I have marriage records for all 4 of the sisters except Annie and at least 2 of the sisters were born in Dodworth, although I also have Higham, Gawber and Barnsley listed too. Many thanks for any help.
