I would be interested in knowing if anyone else has in their tree an Anne Salmon, born 5 March 1799 and baptised 18 May the same year, in Coxwold (according to IGI) the daughter of William Salmon and Jane Appleton. I believe this is the same Ann(e) who as Ann Salmond married Thomas Hall in St Saviour's Church, York on 23 April 1832. I have further information about the family from the census returns. Ann could not write, but she consistently informed the enumerator that she was from Coxwold and I cannot find any other possible candidates. The correct William Hall should have been from Market Weighton, but I have not been able to check this with the marriage record. I am aware of other Salmons from Coxwold and Kilburn, but I cannot fit Ann and her parents into the tree.

red mail Since The Dawn Of Time... - (Gilling East - Yorkshire, North Riding)
My mother was born here at the Village Farm, Gilling East. Her great grandfather Joseph WOOD had come, with his wife and 9 children, from a long line of WOODs in Kirkbymoorside and Kirkdale parishes, in the 1860s, to Low Warren Farm. Joseph's son John WOOD married Mary Jane HARRISON, whose father was the landlord at the Fairfax Arms, the local hostelry. John HARRISON was the landlord there for many years, taking over from his aunt and uncle, William and Ann(nee GARBUTT) FOX in the 1850s until his death in 1893. John HARRISON's wife is Jane KIRK, born 1820 at Boltby, near Thirsk. She had been house servant to the rector, the Rev. J.A. BARNES, whose wife was Lavinia FAIRFAX. John HARRISON's father was William HARRISON, landlord of the White Swan at Ampleforth until 1854. Robert BANKS and Mary WILSON, who married at Gilling in 1711, are ancestors of Leonard BANKS of Coulton. So many of my ancestors, and my husband's ancestors, came from Gilling.......... I think of it as home
red mail Gilling East - (Gilling East - Yorkshire, North Riding)
My 2 x great grandfather, Robert Smith (c.1805, Yorkshire to 31 May 1881, South Africa) farmed at Viewly Hill Farm, Gilling East from c.1835/6 until May 1850. Confirmation that Robert farmed at Gilling East has been found in the Ryedale parish records. I have managed to track the family down in the 1841 census for the area and the family's emigration application was signed by Rev. J.A. Barnes, Rector of Gilling. In an account written about my great grandfather, Joseph Smith, he says "We lived near the village of Gilling ÉÉ and the farm our family worked was called Viewly. Times were hard and it was difficult for my father to make ends meet because the farm barely produced enough to feed and clothe the nine family members. Our cousins and friends in the area were all in the same boat." To date, I have been unable to establish the identities of the cousins in the area. Robert, his wife, Susannah Medd (1806, Old Malton to 29 April 1877, South Africa), and their 8 children, Ellen, Robert, William, Joseph, George, Hannah, Elizabeth and Martha emigrated to Natal, South Africa in July 1850.
