red mail James Woodcock, Master Mariner and Captain
James Woodcock was my 4xg grandfather. He was married to Mary and they had at least two children in Whitby, Jane 1811 and Robert 1821. (There is another couple in Whitby around the same time called James Woodcock and Mary Binner who had several children - these are not the ones I'm looking for. That James was a Cabinet Maker and it took me a long time to untangle them from my own James and Mary.) My James and Mary moved to Stockton on Tees in the late 1820s. Daughter Jane married William Whipby Heslop in 1834 and son Robert married Martha Finlay in 1846. James was referred to as "Captain Woodcock" in one of Stockton's Poor Rate books in the 1830s. The family lived in the Skinner Street area, various roads at various times. James and Robert are missing from the 1841 census, probably at sea - Robert was a shipwright. James died in 1843 and was buried in Holy Trinity churchyard. Wife Mary survived him, living in the same area until her death in 1853 and she was buried in the same churchyard. James' age on his burial records was given as 60, giving an approximate year of birth of 1783. That's where my research has hit a brick wall. I have no idea where he was born. I can't find a record of a birth for him in the parish records for Whitby - I can't even find a marriage for him there, and strongly suspect from my research that he married Mary nee Pinkney in Bishopwearmouth in 1810 (from the IGI). He may have been married before - to another Mary - as there are two births of children in Whitby to a sailor James Woodcock and wife Mary (Mary Ann in 1805 and William Hinds in 1807) - or maybe this was Mary Pinkney and the children born before their marriage? I would love to know where James came from originally so that I can continue my research into the Woodcock line. Any help very welcome!

red mail Hannah Hobson
I am hoping someone can help me to find more information about Hannah & her family. Apparently she was involved in a "fracas & riot" when the mariners of Whitby rose against members of a press-gang (who manhandled the mariners' relatives & neighbours), pulling apart their pub headquarters in Haggersgate. A sad outcome was that a 70-year-old supporter, William Atkinson, was hanged at York for incitement and Hannah Hobson was transported. She was tried at the York assizes on 18 March 1793 - ID no. 1775. There is another record of a trial in Yorkshire on 19 July 1793. Hannah was transported to Australia on the women's convict ship Invincible/Invincable (depends on which website you go to!) in October 1795, arriving in Sydney, 30 April 1796. She was later granted a Ticket of Leave, ticket no. 27/773. We don't know if & when Hannah returned to England - we are some of her descendents in Australia. Hannah is on our mother's side (Breheny's & Campbell's et al). Any help & information would be appreciated. Thank You

red mail Mary Jane Dixon
Looking for information on the above who was born 18 July 1844, the daughter of John and Martha DIXON (nee DONNOWAY or DONOVEN) of Whitby. Mary Jane had two illegitimate children: John, born at Whitby c1864, and Ann Elizabeth (Annie) DIXON, born at Whitby on 10th April 1871. I've not yet checked the parish baptism register to see if the father is named there, and there are no court-imposed bastardy orders in respect of Annie which would name the purported father. Mary Jane married George BROWN, a fisherman, at Whitby in the 29th September 1872, ie 15-18 months after Annie's birth, and is shown as a spinster on the marriage certificate. According to the 1881 census, George and Mary Jane had two children of the marriage - Hannah, born in Hartlepool c1873, and Eliza, born in North Ormesby c1875. In 1881 the family was living in Whitby again and Annie was using the BROWN surname. Nevertheless, by the time she was herself married in 1893 she had reverted to using the DIXON surname. Mary Jane died at Whitby in the October 1900 quarter and in the 1901 census her son John is recorded as a jet worker and living alone in a yard off Church Street. I believe that her daughter Hannah BROWN married a John HILL in 1892 who was involved in the jet trade and that they had three children - Annie (1894), George (1897) and Samuel (1900).
