John BAXTER of Stow Brow (c1811-1888)
John Baxter was my 2xgt grandfather. He married Mary Sedman in 1834 at Scalby. They had 11 children. I have not been able to find his birth/baptism but believe that his mother may have been Eleanor (Ellen/Helen) Baxter, daughter of James Baxter & Elizabeth Newton, born 1785. James was an innkeeper at BROW. In the 1841 census, in John's household are John & Ellen SPENCER,60 & 55, a tailor and his wife. In 1851, John Spencer is described as 'father in law' to John, his wife Eleanor is visiting in Ruswarp on census night.(rather a shame, as if she'd been at Brow, it possibly would have given her relationship to John!) I know that the term father in law could also mean step-father in those days, so perhaps one could assume that Eleanor Spencer was John Baxter's mother. Another pointer is that John & Mary Baxter's first two children are called Elizabeth and Ellen (John's grandmother's and mother's names) John Spencer & Ellen Baxter were married on 4th Feb 1837 at Cloughton. One witness was John Baxter. (Ellen's brother or her son?) I have death certificates for John Spence of Stow Brow (1859 aged 81) & Helen Spencer of Robin Hood's Bay (1868 aged 82) but there are no further clues therein. Have trawled parish registers and other Baxter families in the area.
