Hull, Thomas Wilson, Ruby Broadley
I am seeking information about THOMAS WILSON (which may not be his birth name, possible date of birth 30 October 1888) who I think left Hull probably in the early 1920s with Ruby Alice BROADLEY (nee Wilson). Ruby has been identified, contact made with her descendants, and her life until she left Hull has been traced, but I have no information about Thomas' life. Ruby and Thomas appear in London in 1923 and I have traced their lives from then until their deaths in 1972 and 1951 respectively. Any help in identifying who Thomas Wilson really was would be appreciated. He had a strong Yorkshire accent, but nothing else is known.

red mail BOWERS William in Hull circa 1880
I am trying to locate more details on my 2xgr grandfather William BOWERS. The only definite info I have is that he was the licensed victualler of the George & Dragon pub @ 101 High Street Hull in Dec 1880 when my gr grandma Betsy CAPES (nee BOWERS) was born. He died 29/03/1881 aged 54 i.e. a few days before the 1881 census so we have no idea where he was born (circa 1827). I have tried to follow all the Williams who were born around 1827 but unable to find the correct one who could be in Hull in 1880. On Betsy's birth certificate it gives the indication that he had married my 2xgr grandmother Elizabeth BOWERS late BRACKENBURG formerly SMITH. However have been unable to locate a marriage cert, even for BRACKENBURG He left a will but he leaves everything to his house keeper Elizabeth SMITH ! and there is no mention of his birth town, only Hull. My granddad is led to believe that William was stationed in Canada for some time as part of the British Army. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jo.

red mail Thomas Scane/Skane/Scaine
Looking for info regarding Thomas Scane/Skane/Scaine family who were supposed to be involved in the whaling industry in Hull in the late 1700's early 1800's before coming to Ontario Canada, on one of their own ships abt 1820. They were apparently a well to-do highly respected family of the area. Thomas b about 1765, married abt 1793 possibly to Jane (maybe a Waddingham and maybe in South Cave). Children, Jane b about 1795, Besty, Ellen (died in England), John b 1800 possibly in North or South Cave and Thomas b abt 1805 possibly in Hull. John, Bessy and Thomas may have been baptized in North Cave. Looking to confirm whaling connections and parents/siblings of Thomas. Any help info would be appreciated.
red mail George Henry Cottam/Annie Stephen
I am trying to track down any information about this couple and possible siblings. George Henry Cottam Bn 1897 married an Annie Stephen at the Registery Office Hull on 20th December 1928. Cottam gave his occupation as 'Licensed Victualler' of 12 Grindell St, Hull and Stephen gave her address as The Lansdowne Hotel, Anlaby Rd. I know of the Hotel. They divorced in late 1930's. They both originated from the Ecclesall Bierlow area of Sheffield and as no Family members of the Cottam family were present it is suggested they might have disgraced the family name in someway, possibly a pregnancy. George Henry Cottam (JNR) was also left out of his fathers will which would indicate something was wrong also.Hope someone can help, Regards Gillian
William & Elizabeth JONES in HULL around 1770-1790 ?
William JONES (a son of Jacob ben Naftali Ha-Cohen from LAUTERSBACH and / or FULDA), probably born in 1750-51 in FULHAM, left KINGSTON upon HULL between 1787 and 1795 towards Denmark, where he settled as a merchant in the Grocery line in COPENHAGEN. In England before, he seems to have been a merchant in porcelain ("china"). He was married with a certain Elizabeth, about 20 y older than he's, who died at COPENHAGEN in 1809-10. They were accompanied by their children, Elizabeth and William, both probably born in Hull around 1775-80, who married resp. 1801 and 1805 at COPENHAGEN Johan and Caroline KIETZ, also brother and sister. Any other data concerning this family's arrival to / staying at HULL would be very welcome. I am a direct descendant of William's brother Jonathan who came to BRUSSELS in 1815 and died there in 1829. Thank you everyone !

red mail Looking for relatives of HOLMES Ernest
I am looking for relatives of my maternal Grandfather Ernest Holmes. Ernest's father Abraham HOLMES and his wife Ellen BROWN, Abraham's two married sisters, their husbands and their two children, came out to Australia from Hull in Yorkshire England, in 1901. Abraham had received letters from their elder brother George, who had migrated ten years earlier. Ernest HOLMES was paralysed when he was a toddler. Abraham & Ellen decided to sacrifice their savings and get specialised advice in England. Abraham stayed on the farm in Australia working while the Ellen BROWN undertook the journey overseas with the Ernest. The London specialists gave the terrible verdict that the little boy would never walk again. This was a tragic blow to the Ellen, almost due to go into hospital for the birth of her second baby. When Ernests brother was born (Alfred), the doctors and his mothers relatives urged her to have the baby adopted out as the felt she would be unable to cope with the double burden. Eventually it was decided to leave the Alfred with his aunts in England and return with Ernest to the anxious father in Australia.
I am searching the Cole family history from Sculcoates. George Bickley Cole was born c1865 and married Maria Brown in c1890. George and Maria had seven children, some born in Co. Cork, Ireland. George was in the Merchant Navy. One of their sons Charles Robert Cole was also seagoing a steward and believe he sailed on the schooner Faithful from Cheshire in 1911. In 1914 Charles went into the army. He married Rhoda Gould in 1915 in Sculcoates and had two sons Eric and Sidney. Rhoda died in 1934. Any information on this family would be very much appreciated. Many thanks.

red mail John Thompson Charlton
John Thompson Charlton baptised 21 June 1826, the son of Thomas Charlton and Rebecca nee Thompson, at Drypool, Kingston upon hull. The 1841 census shows the family living in Hodgson Street, Hutton, Kingston upon Hull, Thomas Charlton age 35, Grocer, wife Rebecca age 35, John age 15 and Mary age 13. John Thompson Charlton, Commercial Traveller, married Hannah Elizabeth Breeze on 30th September 1850 at St Mary's, Lambeth, Surrey. The couple must have moved to Australia soon after as he is a Member of Parliament of Victoria in 1853. He surveyed, laid out and named the town of Bundaberg, Queensland about 1869 and owned a sugar and coffee plantation called Rubyanna.Following the death of Hannah in 1873 he moved to Sydney where he married Amelia Gowin Garrick in 1875. His signature on the mariage certificate is "John Charlton Thompson Charlton" but he used Thompson as a surname as well as Charlton. A daughter Alice was born in 1876 as she was known by both names as well. John Charlton Thompson died of consumption in Brisbane Hospital 26th November 1878 and is buried in South Brisbane Cemetery. red mail Does anyone know, who is Thomas BELL?
I'm looking for information on Thomas Bell who lived in the Holy Trinity area of Kingston upon Hull. He lived as a boarder with my ancestors, George COWL and family. In 1841 he is detailed as being 40 and a clerk. He lived his whole life single and after George Cowl died in 1849, Thomas continued to live with George's widow Mary Ann in West Street, until her death in 1875. He was never married, but I think there must have been a connection to the family! Could he have been related to the family through George Cowl's first wife Margaret Bell? Also, one of George and Mary's children was named Thomas and one was given a middle name of Bell! Thomas was born in abt. 1800 in Ripon, Yorkshire and died sometime between 1871 and 1881. Does anyone know anything about this Thomas Bell? Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you.
red mail Marriage certificate conundrum
I have an ancestor, Ann Elizabeth Carter who married George Fearnley in Doncaster in 1849, and in 1853 married John Meeson in Hull. On the first marriage certificate her father is given correctly as Joseph carter, but on the second marriage it says Thomas Martin, inn keeper. I am confused by this. ALso this second marriage has a Emma Martin as a witness, and the first marriage is witness by Martha Martin, Thomas Martin and another Martin that looks like it could be Charlotte Martin. The plot deepened when I found Ann Elizabeth (aged 13) in the 1841 Census, living with a Charlotte Martin (aged 12) at Bulls Head Yard, Gt.Church Street, Gainsborough. I am confused by all this Martin business and cannot work out what relationship is between the Martins and the Carters. Thomas Martin is shown as an 'inn keeper' on the first marriage and it just so happens that the groom was also an inn keeper (some link there perhaps). The second husband (John Meeson) was also a beer seller. If anyone can possibly shed some light on any of these I would be most grateful indeed

They returned to England after the war then went to Malaya when he joined the Malay police force. His wife and two children returned to England and they were eventually divorced in the 1960s.
