red mail Smith, George/June E. Bland and William Bland Smith
Family story is that William B (Bland) Smith (b. 1862, possibly in London and reportedly a twin) was "abandoned" along with his mother and siblings by his father (possibly George, although I've only seen this name referenced once, possibly married to a June E. Bland) who went to Australia to find his fortune in gold. He never returned or sent for the family. Ok, so far, probably not a rare occurrence during the gold rush, but....here is the rest of the story. Supposedly, William B. Smith was taken under the wing of a man named Bland (surname) whom he told that he was going to find his father and kill him for abandoning the family to the streets. Another version is that William B. was under an apprenticeship of some kind to Bland. According to the story, Bland told William B. that once he became "a man" (he was presumably in his teens when this happened) and if he still felt this way, Bland would buy his passage to Australia. Apparently time passed and William B's feelings did not change so true to his word, Bland took him to the dock and bought him passage....here's the twist. Instead of buying passage to Australia, he bought him passage to America. Another version of the story is that the father just came to America and William B. was to meet up with him but by the time he had found him "George" had already passed away. Not sure which story is accurate, if any, but thought I would give a shot at posting on this site to see if this was a family story for anybody else. I am looking for any information on William B.'s father and/or mother so I can continue my search. William B. immigrated to America in 1886. He made his residence, for the most part, in Chico, CA and had 7 children.

red mail London. Chelsea.
Susan Clark, married James Fogg. One of their children was Lucy Emma Fogg born 1873. I think this is my gr.grandmother. She married an Alfred Theodore Willis and in the 1871 Census they are living in Cripplegate, London City with two children Alice and Thomas. My grandmother was born 1873 but none of the above appear on the 1881 or 1891 censi. SO where could they be. My grandmother, also Lucy Emma OR(Emma Lucy) Alfred Theodore Willis and his wife appear again on the 1901 census but with another child. My grandmother then appears on the 1911 census as Louisa Frances Noakes FORMERLY Willis. SO where were the Willis's during the 1881 and 1891 census' as they are definitely not on them. There were rumours my Grandmother was "French". Could they have gone to France or maybe French speaking Canada during that time. If so how would I start to look for them? I am up against a complete brick wall and have no where else to look. Why the name change? AND where was she from 1873 until 1911 when she shows up living with my "grandfather" George Noakes in Westminster with my Aunt Sarah Louise aged 5months? I am mystified. Any ideas out there. It all sounds garbled but when written in sequence it makes more sense (I think). Thank you.
