Owen was subsequently known as Owen ROBERTS and he died in WW1 in Gallipoli in 1915. She had three further children with Samuel, twins Catherine and Ernest in 1894 and Susannah in 1897. red mail Mercer
I am looking for Thomas Edward Mercer I think he came from Manchester, I was born in Salford on 23/04/1964 I lived on lime street my mum was Margaret Lillian Mercer her maiden surname was Mortimer she was from Wakefield West Yorkshire. On my birth certificate it says Thomas was a cement floor layer.
Annie or Nancy Morris
I am looking for information on an Annie MORRIS, sometimes known as Nancy, who worked as a Housekeeper at 144 Broad Street, Pendleton, Salford in 1922-24. She was born in 1900 (+/- the usual 1yr or so which seems to frequent different records) but ended up in Quebec, Canada. I have found her as a passenger on the Montrose on 1st March 1924, sailing from Liverpool to St Johns, New Brunswick, arriving on 8th March with no stops en route the I've been able to identify, but, in spite of employing a top genealogist in Montreal, there is no record of her actually immigrating at that time even though there was NO 'Not On board' annotation against her name in the manifest. I have found an Annie Morris who fits the age, nationality and occupation, working as a Housekeeper until her retirement in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, but have no way of verifying her employment records to see if this is 'our' Annie/Nancy and who may have been her Next of Kin. I have spent forever searching for her after March 1924, via other UK departure ports and arriving in any of the regular North American east coast ports, and I've searched countless border crossings from the US to Canada, but nobody quite fits the picture even though I've used all manner of alternative spellings and similar sounding names. We know she was in Montreal at some point, as there was a letter post-marked Lachine to my father's parents, Charles and Maria TURNER of 2 Villiers Street, Pendleton, in circa 1932. Maria had been a cleaner at 144 Broad Street when Nancy was Housekeeper. (My father, Colin, is now nearly 94 and is riveted by my genealogy work!) We think her father had died as it seemed to be two brothers who acted for her in the UK. We understand that Annie was friendly with a Joshua LEWIS, a butcher, but more than that we cannot say. I know that 144 Broad Street is no longer, but in the 1911 Census it was owned by a Mr FAZAKERLY, a house painter. I would love to know to whom he sold the house or, if rented, who replaced him as the tenant, as it could be most useful. Later, in 1925, an Alexander James MILNE GALL lived there, a student dental surgeon who married a Marjorie STOUT from Seedley Road. The property remained a dental practice there for many years. The residents of the house in the in-between years remains a mystery, and we're not sure where Annie came from either, even if she came from the area! If I could find out who owned/lived in the house in 1922 things might lead me to where I need to be. I have been following a family in Lowcock St., off Lower Broughton Road, by the name of Morris - but only because there is an Annie whose father (Peter Morris) appears to have died by 1911 but who had two older brothers (Thomas and George Henry) recorded in the census that year. This fits with the notion of brothers acting for Annie back here in the UK. Her mother was called Sarah Ellen Morris, born in 1854 in Massachusetts to John James BARKER and Sarah WHALLEY, and her first husband was Michael DUFFY; in the 1911 Census a much older half-brother called John James Duffy was also recorded. I have not been able to find any record showing that the widowed Sarah Ellen actually married Peter MORRIS, but she had 3 or so children by each partner. I have a lot of detail about this family, but, although the facts seem to fit, I cannot 'go' on that if I don't have a proven connection. I will not expand on things here as genealogical research is full of blind alleys! However, if anyone knows of this family and can confirm whether or not 'their' Annie went to Canada after March 1924, I could rule it in or out. If she did not, I will stop following that family. Any information on Annie/Nancy Morris or the history of 144 Broad Street between 1911 and 1926-ish would be hugely appreciated. Thank you.

red mail Preece. Also Brooks, Thornley
My Grandfather was Francis Edwin Preece b 1889, Wales, d 1980. Buried in the St Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Swinton. He was a brother, I think, of Emily Elizabeth (b Powys, 1886), Walter (b 1887), Hilda whose married surname became Brooks, Miriam b 1895 who married Thomas Thornley, Craven aka John (1897), Sarah or Olive (1904), Amy (1910) and Michael. Their parents were John (1859-1927) and Bridget (1866-1945 I think) Preece nee Evans who travelled to Salford from Wales prior to Hilda's birth in 1893. The Preece family settled in Lower Broughton at 5 Derby St., one of the streets between Duke St and Earl St.. After serving in WW1 with the Royal Engineers, Francis Edwin Preece, started up a business as a green grocer in Broughton Lane, opposite Alban St., and bought a horse and cart which he stabled in Talavera St. at the opposite end of Camp St. It was during this time that he met his wife Ann Jane Martin nee Mason. Ann was the widow of Samuel Gromshaw Mason with two young children, a daughter Rhoda (1907-1995) who married Arthur Tomkinson and a son, John Mason (1910-2005). They married in January 1920 and combined their businesses at the Strong Street shop. Frank and Ann Jane went on to have two further children, Francis Douglas Preece (1921) and Irene who married Jim Crowe. Any family links would be treasured. With Thanks, Lorraine (NZ)

I was told that he went to Kimberly, Cape Colony, South Africa in 1890. William had a son, Frederick (1883-1964) who was my grandfather. Thomas Shannon
I am trying to find descendants/relatives of my great, grandfather Thomas Shannon. He died in Ramsgate in 1890, married Elizabeth Ann Attwell on 27 Apr 1876 in Brighton, Sussex. I can't find a birth record for Thomas anywhere, can't find a burial record for him anywhere either. His father's name on the marriage certificate is shown as Edward Brown but census records show that his parents were John and Maria Shannon both born in Galway, Ireland. The 1861 census shows him living in Salford with his parents and siblings. Thomas date of birth would have been about 1854 but I can't find any record of him at all and cannot find a marriage record for John and Maria Shannon anywhere. I have hit the proverbial brick wall and my head hurts!!!! Are there any descendents who could help please? And perhaps explain why Thomas's father's name is shown as Edward Brown on his marriage certificate? His occupation on the marriage certificate is given as 'Herbalist' but again, I can't find record of him on any related website etc. I have been looking and asking for months now and have got no further. My connection with Thomas Shannon is through my Mother's line. Her mother, Grace Shannon was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Shannon. I have found out a lot about Elizabeth and can move back through that ancestral line, but the Shannon line has come to a standstill and I am increasing the profits of the paracetamol drug companies daily.

red mail Looking for Peter Cleary or relatives of
I am seeking information on the Peter Cleary, who lived at 1 Wellington Street East in the 1960's. I have been informed that he may have lived their until the council purchased the land for regeneration in 2003/4. Mr Cleary knew my grandmother Mrs Ruth Hanratty, who also lived at 1 Wellington Street. We have been searching for my grandmother for 48 years + and where recently contacted by the police to advise us they had located her in Agecroft Cemetry. Sadly she had died from Cancer in 1968 and it is believed that Peter Cleary took care of her and also arranged for her burial. Since locating the grave we have been advised that Peter Cleary holds the deeds and is not at the cemetry. This could mean that he either married someone and is buried with them if he has passed away or may even be still alive. My nan would have been 43 when she died. Peter would probably be in his late 80's maybe even 90's now. As we do not have rights to the her grave, we are trying to contact Peter or his family to seek permission to tend the grave and maybe add a memorial for the grandmother and mother we have searched for for so many years. Additionally as my grandmother left when my mother was 7 years old, for her it would bring closure. If you feel you can help or may know the whereabout of mr cleary or his family, please contact me via this site. We have been advised that he may have had links with the Greek Church, taking in greek lodgers from the community and renting part of his house out as a Saturday school for the local greek orthodox church.

My Father (above) was born 25/10/02 presumably in Salford, Manchester. We understood he did live there in his younger days. He would not talk about his family and we never knew anything about them except that he had a brother Harry who served with the army in India and that he did live with his sister Alice for a time. He may have lived in Moston Lane, Manchester for a time as when we were in that area many years ago he told us not to go snooping around in Moston Lane! So we didnt. Not much to go on, obviously some skeletons in the cupboard. Any leads would be welcome.

His occupation was "Photographer" with his own account! His wife was Isabella and they had 3 children, namely Isabella, James and Elsie.
