red mail TAYLOR James 1817-1855
Can anyone help with tracing the parents of James Taylor, a hat manufacturer in Rochdale? James Taylor: Born: 29th Jan 1817, apparently in Rochdale. The family bible states that James parents were James Taylor born 6th March 1786 and Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) born: 1st February 1793. There is no record of their marriage. On 1841 census James is shown at Spotland Bridge with James Taylor, Minister and his brother Ralph Taylor (Rev. James also apparently a former Hat Manufacturer, a Unitarian Methodist Minister for Honey Hole Chapel, Todmorden and part of the Chartist movement). Both these gentlemen were single and neither were the father of the younger James. On 18th May 1843 James married Ellen Stott (both give their residence as Spotland) at the Parochial Church of Todmorden. On the marriage cert. Jamess father is listed as James Taylor but there is no occupation. We also do not know which church would have been the Parochial Church for Todmorden in 1843, nor why they would have travelled to Todmorden while living in Spotland (unless it was due to their eldest son being born in the fourth quarter of 1843 - but the pregnant bride does not seem to have been particularly unusual for the time.) On the 1851 census James and Ellen, with their sons and Ellens mother are shown at Fentons Place, Rochdale. James died: 30 November 1855, Rochdale and is buried on an island at the entrance to Rochdale Cemetery with James Leach and Thomas Livesey, both of whom were in the Chartist movement. If anyone can help, I would be grateful

red mail CORNWELL
This is a long shot, but I'm looking for any information on FLORENCE CORNWELL (b. c1885, Rochdale). Florence was my Grandmother's (FRANCES DOROTHEA CORNWELL, b. 1893, Dundee, Scotland) sister. Their parents were JOHN BROCKBANK CORNWELL (b. 1858, Blackburn, Lancs and a tailor) and SARAH JANE HILL (b. c1856, Rochdale?), who were married in Rochdale in 1883. John later lived in Dundee and then Aberdeen and died there after running a marathon in 1905. His wife Sarah Jane seemed to just disappear and the eldest child, Florence, brought up her siblings, who also included LEO (b. 1886, Colne, Lancs), VICTOR (b. 1888, Wantage, Berks) and AUGUSTINE (b. 1894, Dundee, Scotland). My Florence, along with her sister Frances, was a nurse at a mental asylum in Huddersfield during the 1911 Census. I don't know if Florence married. Leo married EDITH HANNAH HOGG in Nottingham in 1921, but appears to have had no children. He died in Newcastle in 1958. Victor doesn't appear to have married and died in Newcastle in 1954. Augustine apparently emigrated to Burma, but nothing more is known about him. Here's hoping to hear from someone who knows this family. Best regards, Philip
red mail Mayo - Rochdale GROARK(E)
I'm interested in GROARKE and GROARK families that moved from County Mayo (probably Swinford) to Rochdale around the mid-1800's. My Great-Great-Grandfather was JOHN GROARK(E) born c1851 in Co Mayo, Ireland. He married MARY ANN MORGAN in 1883 and they had five children: Michael Douglas, Mary Catherine and John Patrick plus Margaret and Anthony who died in infancy. On John's 1883 marriage cert the witnesses are BRIDGET GROARK and EDMUND GROARK and I am keen to identify these two, who may well be siblings or cousins. On the 1881 census there's my John Groark(e), a Grocer born c1851 in Ireland living in Wardleworth with Bridget Groark born c1861 in Ireland, a Cotton Operative, at the address as stated on John's wedding cert. Just a few streets away is JOHN T GROARK born c1849 in Ireland, a Grocer and EDMUND GROARK born c1857 in Ireland, a brick layer. I suspect these four Groarks are all from the same family back in County Mayo but can't trace them. I've found a death record for a JOHN THOMAS GROARK in 1897 at Rochdale but other than that, I cannot identify BRIDGET, JOHN T or EDMUND coming forwards or backwards. I have not gone back any further with this line other than knowing that JOHN GROARK(E)'S Father would have also been called JOHN GROARK(E) (a Farmer) as stated on his marriage certificate.
