red mail Spicer Family - Acton London (Capel Arms)
Am looking at the Spicer family who ran the Capel Arms public house in Osborne Road, South Acton during the early part of 1910 through to 1940's. Albert Edward Spicer & Emma Spicer (nee Michell) were the licensee and their children who I am researching were ALICE MAUD MARY SPICER born Millom, Cumberland in 1883 who may have been in a relationship (marriage?) with Henry Alfred Hardy. I am also looking for information on their son SAMPSON SPICER who died in May 1915 at Ypres, Belgium. Little information is known about him and his service records were destroyed by WW2 bombing. He does not appear on any local War Memorials, and was not mentioned in the local newspaper 'Acton Gazette' - it's as if he never existed. Someone, somewhere should have some information/photo of this brave soul. Any information gratefully accepted. Andy.

William was a Stone Mason and they lived in Victor Harbor, South Australia in 1867 where they had daughter Margaret Grace Robertson. Unable to find when they arrived in Australia. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
WEBSTER, Ellen - schoolmistress 1841
On Census Night 1841, Ellen Webster was in King Street, City of Hereford, schoolmistress, aged 30, not born in Herefordshire. Apart from this entry, I can find no trace of her in the City of Hereford. Can anyone identify her? I don't need a lot of detail. I would be content to know where she was born and where she went after 1841. Perhaps she was Miss Webster of Chester. In 1838, Misses Webster and Booth acquired the Runcorn Hill Cheshire school. In 1843, the school was acquired by the Misses Marston. Both events were advertised in the Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser. I do so hope that someone knows something about Ellen Webster. .
Seeking anyone researching the Lasbury surname in Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire.
I am researching my paternal family line and welcome anyone who has any information to get in touch please. My GG grandfather William Matthews 1819-1871 was born 'somewhere ' in England, emigrated to India where he was employed by East India Co firstly as Patrol Officer of Salt Revenue and was Deputy Collector Taxes when he died. He was married to a Mary who bore three children ; William 1846, Thomas 1849 & Charlotte 1853. Charles 1855, George 1858, Katherine 1862 & Richard 1863 were born from two or three 'native ' women. A Who's Who 1926 gives William living in Walmer in Kent but again there is no evidence to prove this .

red mail Found family heirloom
I recently found a piece of embroidery amongst some items that came from my grandparents house in England. It is a sampler-an embroidered picture of a very large perhaps country house, and across the bottom of the piece it says Elizabeth Doviner work finished 1826. I have searched for a family with this last name and found them mostly in Yorkshire, and a few in Warwickshire, there are very few records, many of them look like mistranscriptions of the names given. My grandparents families originated in Staffordshire, the embroidery was brought to Canada in 1972, so must have been acquired by them previous to that date. I don't know if it was purchased or is somehow connected to their families the Ross and Richards families. If anyone has any information about the family I would love to be able to trace them

red mail James Wharton (1861)
I'm struggling with finding info on this chap. 1901 Census suggests a birth in Dudley Port, 1911 suggests Gateshill, Derby. Know facts are that he married a Sarah Jane (surname unknown), this is on the 1901 census. On the 1911 Census he is shown as having a wife named Elizabeth (again surname unknown). He had a number of children to both wives, including another James born 1890 (or thereabouts). Pre the 1891 census the trail is cold (he is shown as having Sarah Jane as a wife on the 1891 census too. Does anyone have any info? UPDATE: Recent receipt of a birth certificate for one of the daughters shows Sarah Jane to be Sarah Jane Steer. Elizabeth may have been Elizabeth Whincup, but the marriage may have been 1913 not 1903, although this would conflict with the 1911 census. A marriage certificate has been ordered from the Records Office. SECOND UPDATE: Marriage certificate (s) gives nothing more. Father is unamed. Age at first marriage suggests Birth year is 1865 not 1861 as thought from early censuses. Second marriage is definitely Elizabeth Whincup to this James, not his son as some have suggested, and confirms 1865 as birth year.
red mail George Goff and Mary (possibly Weeks)
George Goff was born in 1847. I believe he married a Mary Weeks in 1875 in West Sussex. They went on to have Kate Goff (my great great gran) in 1886, Edith Emma Goff in 1888, Elizabeth Maud Goff in 1890, Mary Goff date unknown and Harriet Goff in 1881. They lived in Sussex. George Goff's parents were Henry Goff born 1812 in South Harting and Harriot Stilwell born 1806 in West Marden. They were married on October 26, 1830 in Upmarden, Sussex. They went on to have Elizabeth Goff in 1841, Caroline Goff in 1845, David Goff also in 1847 (so maybe twin of George) and William Goff in 1839. Would love to know more about the Goff family and the Weeks family

red mail Jeffries, Mary (abt 1860 - abt 1895, somewhere in England): a huge brick wall
Looking for info on my elusive gr grandmother, Mary Jeffries. I don't even know where in England she was born. All I know is that she emigrated to Pennsylvania (PA), U.S. and was married to my gr grandfather, William Hall (b 1856 in town of Tow Law, Wolsingham Durham), a coal miner who had emigrated to Scranton, PA. Records for that era in PA. are often non-existent; they were kept erratically, especially where coal patch residents were concerned. William Hall and Mary Jeffries were probably married in PA since there is no UK record. They had my grandfather, Arthur Hall, in 1893. Sometime after that and before 1900 she died giving birth to a second child (the child also died) but there are no records. To further complicate matters, the 1890 U.S. census was lost long ago in a fire, and that is the only place I would have been sure to find her. Yet another complication is that William parked son Arthur with his own father, Thompson Hall (b 1830 in Shotley, Northumberland and emigrated to PA in 1882) after the death of Mary Jeffries and became a "hobo" who rode the rails, so there are few records on him and none through which Mary Jeffries can be traced. Arthur was raised by his grandfather, Thompson Hall. I only know his mother's name from what he told me and from his documents.
Gueston Evans
Was billeted with my mother in WW11.

red mail Harbridge, Joseph (Father: William)
Looking for info on my grandfather's family. In 1906 he emigrated to Canada on an 'Orphan' boat, the SS Siberia, which sailed out of Liverpool on June 12th, 1906. He was 9 years old at the time. Kate (?) and William had five children in all... the only info I have on them for 1906 was: 1 son at Shustoke, 1 son in army (may have been Les, who later immigrated to Whiterock, BC, Canada), 1 daughter married, 1 son living with aunt, 1 son truant and always running away (this would have been Joseph, my grandfather). I have any family history from the time he arrived in Canada, but am desparately seeking information on my ancestors before he was put in the Middlemore orphanage. Please contact me if you have any information which may help in my research. Thanks!!! Susan
