red mail Magson/Megson, Braven(d)er and Outhet: Beverley, Irton & Scarborough
I'm trying to disentangle a branch of my family which is complicated with multiple generations of bastardy. I have an Ellen Outhet/Outhwaite, later Mrs Jackson (c. 1810-65), from Irton, who had several children before marriage, apparently with a married man called William Braven(d)er. Some of these children, notably John, Jane and Ada, also use the Megson/Magson surname, and in the 1841 census, some of the children (Mary Ann and Ellen Outhet and a Jane Mexon) are staying with an old lady, Mary Mexon (sic) at Owen's Yard in Scarborough. A Mary Authwaite (sic) m. Thomas Magson in Seamer in 1817, but it's unclear if this is the same Mary or a younger one. They are clearly all closely connected as Ada and her half-sister Hannah Jackson visited Jane and her partner (later husband) William Lee in Whitby in 1861. Jane married William using Outhwaite as her surname, in 1877. There are also close family ties (in witnessing a wedding) with a Lavinia Megson/Magson (later Mrs Smith, c. 1826-1900), daughter of Thomas. She seems to have been born in Beverley, but I can't find a baptism. I note also in 1841 in Allerston a Mary Magson living in the household of an Isaac Braven(d)er.

red mail GREENWOOD FAMILY (Yorkshire Connection)
I am researching the Greenwood family. My branch have been based in the Buckinghamshire/Oxfordshire and South East England area since the 18th century but I have now got bogged down identifying a Thomas Greenwood and his wife Alice. I know they were married prior to 1709 when the first identified birth of the marriage is recorded, that between then and 1721 they had a further six children, all born in Cuddington, Bucks and that he died in 1733 in Cuddington. I do not know when or where he was born, when he was married or his wifes maiden name. I think he would have been born about 1685. The only Thomas Greenwood I have found with a wife Alice was married at Dent in Yorkshire on the 6th May 1701. Yorkshire is a Greenwood stronghold and I am wondering if this couple perhaps married had children in Yorkshire then moved south to Bucks where they continued their family or did Thomas come from Cuddington and met and married Alice in Yorkshire subsequently returning south to set up home. Any help confirming the identities of Thomas and Alice and any children, other than those born in Cuddington, would be greatly appreciated.

red mail DAVIS David
I am looking for a man named David Davis born approx 1882. It was always said in the family that he was a farmer although I have no evidence of this. He married Annie Latham in around 1900. It was also said in the family that David was from Yorkshire but again I have no solid leads. I have found a family of Latham's in Lancashire (Sharples) but I cannot link them to my Annie until I can obtain a bit more to go on. David and Annie had a daughter named Annie Elizabeth Davis, but I do not have any siblings for her as I do not have access to the 1901 or 1911 census. Any help on locating a marriage certificate for Annie and David would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards, Charlotte

red mail Rose Walker
I am seeking information about the movements of our Grandmother during her time in England between 1946 and 1958. Rose was known to use the alias of Ida. Her maiden name is Dalglish and she was born in Australia in 1930. She arrived in England on the HMS Victorious as a 15/16 year old war bride. She was married to a Bill Walker (navy), if stories are correct his father was a man of the church and rejected Rose as a daughter in law. Rose apparently boarded with a Mrs Jacobs for a time. When Rose left England in 1958 upon the Fairsea she did so in the name of Rose Walker with children Paul Brown b.1952, David Brown b. 1953, Pauline Brown b.1957 and Annette Bent b.1955. of 8 Beecroft Grove Leopold St, Leeds. In recent years it has been discovered she left behind two daughters who I believe to be older and the children of Bill; Margaret and Rosemary. Rose gave birth to John Walker in Perth Western Australia in December 1958, she was 10 weeks pregnant when she left England. Rose has talked about working in a kitchen as a cook where the boss would throw things in anger. She has also told us that Johns father was Jamaican (we have photo of him, name on the back says Ivan). Rose won't discuss this part of her life because she says it is too painful, she is an old lady and I don't want to upset her however my Dad John feels he is a nobody.
Think this name may come from Yorkshire. Any clues welcomed.Thanks.

red mail Industrial school of Good Shepherd, Southowram, Yorkshire
I am seeking information about the above school. My grandfather, Patrick Penman, lived there during the 1901 census. His mother died shortly after birth and the family story says he was "adopted" but that seems wrong since he kept his family name and stayed in contact with his parents and siblings. I am wondering if he may have been raised by a parish group as a baby and then placed in this home to learn a trade. His father remarried when he was about 3 so I have no idea why they didn't claim him and bring him back home. Does anyone understand how adoptions worked in those days?

Married James Edward Harris in 1914 and moved to Sydney Australia around 1927 with their two children, William Edward Harris (born 1917 Normanton, Yorkshire) and Doreen Harris (born Normanton, Yorkshire, either before or after William Edward Harris). Also looking for details of James Edward Harris. He was a coal miner in Normanton, Yorkshire. Olivetta and James are my great grandparents. Linthwaite & Almondbury in Yorkshire /Dewsbury in York/ Brayshaw/Lassey (Lacy)/Stokes/Kaye/ I am searching for the family of John William Brayshaw b. abt. 1776 probably in York. Married 1795 in York, Yorkshire to Mary Sykes Stokes b. 1778. John William died 4 April 1848 in Yorkshire. They had the following children: Sarah b. 7 July 1803; Nancy b. 7 April 1806; Elizabeth b. 20 Aug. 1808 married 7 August 1831 in Almondbury, Yorkshire, to Joseph Kaye: Harriet M. Brayshaw b. 15 April 1811 married 25 Dec 1830 in Almondbury to Abraham Kaye (brother of Joseph); William b. 30 Oct 1813, married 13 August 1838 in Parish Church, Parish of Dewsbury, York County to Julia Lacy (daughter of Squire Lassey and wife Hannah Greenwood); James b. 9 April 1819 m. Jane Melville. We believe that Sargent John William Brayshaw fought in the 51st Foot Regiment in the Battle of Waterloo but cannot find proof. Census return for 1841 for Linthwaite: “John Brayshaw, 65, clothier, Mary Brayshaw, wife, 60, Charlotte, 15.” The Lassey (Lacy) family lived in Boothroyd, a section of Dewsbury. Squire Lassey, age 50 and Hannah (Greenwood) Lassey, age 55, were the parents of Julia Lassey married to William Brayshaw. Edward, age 15, and Joseph, age 13 were their sons and brothers to Julia. Joseph, age 6 and Hannah, age 2, must have been grandchildren of their son, Thomas. Thomas names a son, Joseph and daughter, Hannah in his Will signed 19 July 1868. He was spelling his name Lacy by this time and lived in Boothroyd Lane in Dewsbury in the County of York. The Brayshaws, William and wife Julia Lacy Brayshaw emigrated to America and arrived in January 1841. It appears that this was about the same time that Elizabeth Brayshaw Kaye and husband, Joseph Kaye as well as Harriet Brayshaw Kaye and husband Abraham Kaye emigrated to America. They settled initially in the Baltimore area.

red mail John Drury and Ann Broder/Border??
Looking for information on this family which some or all of them migrated to Ontario, Canada in the early 1800's possibly around 1845. The husbands name was John Drury (my 3rd great grandfather) and the wife I'm not quite sure of I know her first name was Ann but not sure of the last name. They had 10 children: Elizabeth; Ann; Mary; John; Hannah; William (my 2nd great grandfather); James; Martha; George; and Esther. After this generation I have quite a bit of information, but it stops here. Any help would truly be appreciated! The last spelling of the last name was changed to Drewry when they became citizens of Canada; we belive there was a mistake made on the imigration papers. This is just a tale that has been passed through the generations. Thank you ahead of time for any help. Sincerly, Beverly

red mail Fawcett - Really need help here
I really need help with this one - this is my stumbling block, and my information is vague to say the least but here goes. Charles FAWCETT (abt 1848 - spelling maybe different) apparently originated from Yorkshire (acording to death cert),married (unknown) but has listed 2 daughters names and ages unknown. His middle name name have been Valender/Ballender/Valandar or a variation of this. Also listed on the death certificate was his occupation as a painter. Died in Western Australia in 1905. I haven't been able to locate him on any shipping lists nor census - nothing. Does anyone have a gentleman that fits this description but doesn't know what happened to him?? Or do you have a man with a name variation that had 2 daughters?? Anything would be greatly appreciated. Please help. Thanks

red mail William Ward circa 1774 immigration to Nova Scotia
William Ward –born Yorkshire circa 1754. The sailing vessel: Two Friends; Sailed 07 March 1774; From Hull, Yorkshire, England; With 103 passengers; Bound for Fort Cumberland, Nova Scotia (Actually arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada); The vessel type is a Brigantine. It is known that William Ward; his wife Elizabeth and an infant son Moses were passengers aboard the Two Friends. They apparently sailed to Nova Scotia, ‘to seek a better living’. Some documents state that William Ward’s rent had been raised by the landowner and thus weighed heavily in the decision to immigrate to North America. Politically, the Crown needed loyal subjects to settle the colony after its relatively recent acquirement from the French. A further, political upheaval brewed in the southern colonies, which would lead to the formation of the United States of America. The Yorkshire immigration of this period can be argued to be instrumental in Nova Scotia’s residents’ decision to remain loyal to the Crown. One might suggest that if the demographics of the colony had not been changed from the significant French population, remaining after the infamous Acadian Expulsion, then the Nova Scotia colony would have been lost to the USA. Nova Scotia could even have reverted to French ownership with the help of a grateful USA alliance with the French Crown. One researcher suggests William Ward married Elizabeth nee Grant or Flintoff in a Bilsdale Midcable parish church on 15 February 1774. A son Moses is listed as a passenger for the Two Friends. An approximate age for the child is about nine months. Would like to correspond with persons having knowledge of the above Ward family, or with persons who can give guidance in this quest.
