My 3 X Great Grandfather James Panton was born about 1778. He married Ann Dalglish in London in 1808. I always thought he was a Londoner until I discovered him on the 1851 census living in Deptford but giving his place of birth as Swindon, Wiltshire. He died in 1856 so I have not been able to confirm this place of birth on any other census records. So far I have been unable to trace his birth or parents anywhere in the Swindon area, despite paying a researcher. If anyone has any links to the Panton family in Swindon I would very grateful to hear from them. Sometimes the name Panton is spelt Ponton, Pontin or Penton.

My 'Swindon families' are the Ryan and Thomas families who lived next door to each other in Westcott Street and were linked by the marriage of my Great Grandparents (Michael Ryan (b India 1871) a rivetter for the GWR and Maria Thomas). There were five children Thomas (b1897) Beatrice (b1898) my maternal grandfather James (b1900) Eileen (b1902) and Joseph (b1905). The Ryan family was headed by my GG Grandfather Bartholomew Ryan (a labourer for the GWR who also served in India with the Royal Artillery) and his wife Mary Ann (nee' Ray). My Great Grandfather's siblings were John (b India 1873)Catherine (b1880) Martin (b1885) and Margaret (b1890). The latter were all born in Highworth. The Thomas family consisted of Francis Thomas (b1849 Grittleton)a GWR Porter and his wife Emily (nee' Lewis) and their 13 children: Mary, Maria (b 1874 my GGrandmother) William, James, Rhoda, Beatrice, Rose, Henry, Florence (who moved to Birkenhead with my Great Grandparents. My father was bought up by his mothers family who had little contact with the Taylor family. The Taylor family were Primitive Methodist and the Curtis were Church of England. My Grandfather was Charles George Taylor 1851 born Hilmarton/Calne who married married Bertha (Elizabeth) in Derry Hill. C1873 and died c1900??? No Issue. Charles George Taylor worked for Great Wester Railway as a machine man. His Elder brother Aaron Newman Taylor was born 1848 Hilmarton and lived in Swindon with a family and worked Great Wester Railway as Railway Warehouseman and also a Lay preacher for Primitive Methodist Church. His issue by 2 marriages?? George 1872 James 1874 Elizabeth 1878 Frederick 1880 and Elsie who married .?...Clarke and went to Canada....also Mary Ann ..Nancy... Stella and Edward who was a school boy in 1926 Aaron was alive in 1926 when at 19 my Dad was allowed to see his Uncle before he came to Australia on the MV Jarvis Bay in the first Big Brother Movement arriving Dec 1926. I am looking for information on William James Lewis, born abt 1883 in Frome. At 18 (1901) he and his elder brother were lodging at Albion St. with the Billinger family. He was working as a Locomotive Boilermaker at the time. I estimate he married about 1908 or later.I think he stayed in Swindon. Most of his brothers worked for the Railway as did his father who was killed by a train in Melksham. William is married to Kate. They have two children, Leslie and Doris. This is all I know. I hope it means something to somebody.

My great grandfather was Edgar Charles Spurlock, married to Gertrude Jane Dollins of Kingston St Mary. Edgar was a great character, who died in 1966. His family ran a fish and chip shop in Manchester Rd, Swindon, but he was more of an engineer. Moved to Highworth Rd in Swindon in the 1930's, with their only son, Eric Frank Spurlock (born 1915, died 1983). Eric married Muriel Davidson of Farnsby St., and they had 2 children: Hilary Spurlock and Alan Spurlock (my father).
Trying to trace my grandads family , his name was Charles Rolfe born 1887 married Alice Penny 1906 in Swindon , fathers name was Henry Rolfe. This is all we know , except that a lady was buried at Shalbourne in 1907 age 71 her name was Annie Rolfe ( we think might be Charles grandmother) as family kept funeral notice , in the same cemetry there is a memorial to a Charles Rolfe died 1880 in Afganistan aged 22. does anyone remember my 'uncle bonny' ,he was an insurance agent in the 50's for royal liver, his district manager was called H. king. he was my mums brother(victoria rowe) and he went to zimbabwe to be a funeral director, it was called rhodesia whenhe went. if i could find out what his real christian name is it would help me to trace him in zimbabwe, his wife was called ada stevens.
