red mail John & Patrick McKenna
In case someone can help us - I went to the British Library in London this week and found a 'Recruit enlistment in the Royal Artillery' for Patrick McKenna (at Newry) in Sept. 1859 age given as 21. Maybe he had to say he was 21 so that he could 'sign-on'!!? (our previous entry showed him as being born in Donaghmore, Tyrone in 1840)
red mail Patrick McKenna born 1840, Donaghmore
Australian EA Collins' paternal Great Grandfather, Patrick McKenna, left Ireland for India and joined the Royal Horse Artillery in 1859 (signed on in Sept. 1859 in Newry). Married an Irish lady - Anne Elizabeth Byrne in Madras in 1867 and later had children in India, named: Alice-1873; Mary-1881 and Winnifred-1882 (our grandmother). He was said to have ridden a horse through a window and was apparantly sent to India by his family to join an army. He also served with the Indian Army in Burma in 1886 as a Warrant Officer (Conductor). His wife Anne died of cancer in Madras in 1906 aged 55 - Anne was listed as a pensioner, so we assumed that Patrick had already passed on. Should any McKenna or Little be able to help us find any information about this brave & colourful ancestor - During my searches for this ancestor I have just found that his father's name was John and his mother Ellen. We are still hoping someone can advise us where he is buried, etc. - PLEASE let us know. - We also believe that Patrick's daughter Mrs. Winnifred Little died in England around 1983.
