Capt Brooks, Flag of Unknown Warrior
In 1920, a Captain Brooks of the No 68 Company Graves Registration Unit was in charge of the party which exhumed a body from Bleuet Farm Cemetery, Belgium and was responsible for escorting it, being one of the four bodies to be known as the Unknown Warrior, to St. Pol sur Ternoise. As a Union Flag was not large enough to cover the coffin it was replaced for its journey to Westminster Abbey. Captain Brooks retained the original flag and it remained in Belgium until 1950 when he recovered it, and in 1953 presented to the Henfield Branch of The British Legion, (It is reported his family had lived in the village for many generations). In 1976 the Union Flag was presented to Henfield Parish Council, which subsequently loaned it to St. Peter's Church, Henfield, where it is displayed annually on the altar steps at the Service of Remembrance. The identity of this Capt. Brooks has not been found nor his family. Information on the 68th Company GRU is also sought. A search of the electoral registers of the locality between 1945 and 1960, held at West Sussex Records Office, Chichester, could be useful, should anyone care to do so.
