Looking for anyone able to solve this little riddle. I have an ancestor benjamin beal, born 19 sept 1791, supposedly in cuckfield. Here is my riddle. He got married to Harriet Flint 10 nov 1813 in cuckfield and was baptised 16 sept 1819. At no point did he reveal his parents! When I saw the adult baptism, I immediately thought that the person marrying them might have required it, but I then discovered he married before the baptism.

This is a long shot but I am looking for my mum's sister, born Carol Ann Drake on 15 June 1949 in Cuckfield Hospital. Mother's name recorded on the birth certificate is Rose Gladys Drake. Carol was adopted at 6 weeks old and we have no further information on her. Me and my mum would love to find her.

The Pilstye Farmhouse was previously listed as Pilstye. The house is T-shaped and built by the Gatland family. Originally 2-storeys, the second floor added on 1822. Five windows. Ashlar. The 2 westernmost window-bays project. Parapet. Slate roof. Three-lilght casement windos with stone mullions and transoms and small square panes. Pointed doorway with the initials "H.G." and "A.G." in the spandrels and the date 1647 over it. Ornamental plaster ceilings inside and C18 staircase. I would like a picture of this house as well as any other information about the Gatlands who owned this farm. it is located on Cherry Lane, Balcombe, West Sussex RH17 6JN. Garard Gatland was born 1528 of Pilsty, Cuckfield, Sussex, England. I am interested in knowing if this is the farm on which he was born.

A photograph of the Rose & Crown in Cuckfield, Sussex (C.1860), shows half a workshop adjacent to and south of the pub. Only half of the workshop and sign is visible but reads JEFF- (top line), BUILDERS, WHE- (2nd line), AND SMI-(3rd line), CARRIAGES REPAIR- (4th line). Does anyone have any more information about above business or the Rose & Crown during late C19. A Thomas Tester was licensee of the R&C on 1861 and 1871 census which is my family connection.

My GATLAND family line dates back to 1502 when Jarard Gatland was born. He died in 1579 and married Anne I'm not sure of the location. However, I do know that Garard Gatland II was born in Cuckfield, Sussex in 1528 and died in 1628 and was married to Margery who was born 1548 and died in 1604 in Cuckfield. Then, their son Henry Gatland was born 1573 in Cuckfield and died in 1632. His son John Gatlin (the spelling changes here)was born 1616 in Cuckfield, came to America and died in 1698 in North Carolina. He was married to Anne Reed who was born in 1620 in Susses with no known death date. Their son William Gatlin was born 1640 in Nanesmond County Virginia and died in 1700. His son Edward I Gatlin was born in 1675 in Isle of Wright County Virginia and died in 1727 in Craven County North Carolina and was married to Elizabeth George who was born in 1673 in Isle of Wright County Virginia with death date unknow. Their son John I Gatlin was born in 1695 in Craven County North Carolina with death date unknown and was married to Elizabeth George (?). Their sone was Edward Gatlin II who was born in 1716 and died in 1763 and was married to Elizabeth Green. Their son Lazarus Gatlin was born in 1740 in Craven County, North Carolina and died 1808 in North Carolina. He son was Thomas G Gatlin born in 1780 in Davidson County, Tennessee with no know death date and was married to Nancy May. Their son was Alvin Gatlin who was born in 1820 in Tennessee with no know death date and was married to Liz. Their son was James R. Gatlin born in 1860 in Tennessee with no know death date and was married to Nancy Margaret Yates who was born in 1864 in Arkansas. Their son John Herbert Gatlin was born 1888 in Tennessee and died in 1957 in Nashville, Davidson County Tennessee and was married to Lula Mai Sweeney who was born in 1895 in Franklin Tennessee. Their son Herbert Nicholas Gatlin (my father) was born in 1913 in Nashville Tennessee, died in 1995 in Duluth Georgia, and was married to Margaret Louise Fetherling born in 1913 in Zanesville, Ohio and died in 2000 in Duluth Georgia. Their son, Herbert Nicholas Gatlin II (my brother) is still living. I know a nice time line, but I know very little about the people. I would like to fill in the blanks where possible as to occupations, etc.

Hey i was looking to trace the tidy family from cuckfield sussex. I know that there was 9 children in the family and there names were: Ruth maud (known as maud)moses edward, hiram aaron, frances deborah (known as deborah)thomas, amy, elizabeth mary, miriam mary and dorathy they would have all been born between the late 1800's and early 1900's. I know that moses was born 1895 and that frances deborah was born in 1909 and ruth maud 1907. Any info would help thanks
I have found out some info. on this. I believe it was a workhouse, then became a military hospital and then Cuckfield Hospital. Is there any specific information for the 1947/48 time. Was it still a workhouse? A home for unmarried mothers? I would be glad of any information.

The Cleaver's came to Cuckfield in the early to mid 1890s and my grandmother Edith was born there to John and Mary Ann Cleaver in 1896. Both John and Mary Ann are bruied in the Church cemetary and I'd like to find any descendents of the Cleavers who are alive and may have information about the family.
