Call this a marriage?
I have located a marriage between Frederick Sedgwick Abbott and Christiana Davey in the Apr/May/June quarter of 1847 at St George, Southwark. In 1848 Frederick arrived in New Zealand without his wife. 34 years later he is shown in the 1881 census with his wife Christiana, at 113 Cowslip Rd, Woodford, South Essex. What kind of a marriage survives a 34 year break? He was last seen in New Zealand about 1872 without any sign of a woman in his life, after 22 years in our small town of Waipawa , once known as Abbotsford after him. Any suggestions?

red mail Charles Homer Martin & William Austin Martin
Some time ago a lady in Australia asked for details of her forebear Charles Homer Martin, born in Southwark in 1795. She's since been in touch with me, but anyone else interested in this man should read my book 'Southwark Luck', published in South Melbourne, Australia, in 2012. It tells his life story from start to finish. The first chapter contains much about his life in Southwark until 1818, especially as a labourer on a rope walk. However there were so many Martins in Southwark at this time that I was never able to work out what happened to his older brother William Austin Martin, or his parents William and Elizabeth Martin. William (the father) was a victualler in St George the Martyr parish in 1795, but an 1802 baptism record for a Robert Martin, son of a victualler named William, hints that William later moved to the adjoining parish of St Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey. If so, his wife Elizabeth had died, because in 1802 the baby's mother was recorded as Ann. If anyone knows more, I'd be pleased to receive details. Thanks, Louise
red mail Duffetts, Southwark 1880-1890
I am searching for information on the Duffetts of Southwark. My grandfather's mother was born in Catherine Ann Duffett in Jan 1896 to John Duffett and Mary Ann Duffett (nee Thomas). They lived at the time in 17 Tabard Street, Southwark. Oddly I cannot find them on any censuses whatsoever. There is a family rumour of either an Irish connection and the possibility that the children became orphans. I believe there were at least 3 other children, Walter Henry b 1888 St Olave's Bermondsey, Mary Ann Duffett b 1892 St Saviour's parish and Thomas William Duffett born 1891 St Saviour's. Really want to see if I can find out more information as my grandfather knows very little about his family.

red mail STEPHENS Bertha Elizabeth
Bertha Elizabeth STEPHENS was born in Southwark in1908 but I am unable to trace her on 1911 census and therefore cannot find any information about her parents or siblings. She married William David NASH in 1925 and bore two sons - my father, David (1927) and Anthony (1931). It is possible that she had a step-family but didn't take their name. Any information would be welcome.
red mail William Lowrie
I am looking for information about William Lowrie, a copper plate printer, of Tooley Street, Southwark from about 1810. His marriage licence application states that there was no baptismal record for him because his parents were dissenters. The burial record when he died in 1832 suggests that he was born in about 1763-4. He was buried in Maze Hill, Southwark, as was a John Clavering Lowrie, the son of Alexander Lowrie and Mary Clavering. The assumption would be, therefore, that William is John's brother. Alexander married Mary in Saint Botolph Bishopsgate on 20th April 1760. The clockmaker's guild apprenticeship records for John C Lowrie show that in 1780 he was a gardener in Hackney. Any further information about William's origins or about Alexander would be most welcome.

red mail BYFORD'S of Bermondsey Southwark area
Hi i am trying to trace BYfords living in this area from the early 1800's. I have william Gardiner Byford 1820c and siblings Albert 1824c and frances byford 1826c all in bermondsey area. Albert married louisa Neale in 1842. frances, his sister is on the 1841 census with albert . on the 1851 census she is working for a mariners family. there is no record of her after 1861 when she has a daughter called emily neale. emily's birth cert. states that her father is thomas NEALE and that parents were married. but there is no record of this marriage and it turns out that Thomas was already married to someone else! frances disapears after this date in all uk census returns so may have gone abroad??? there is only ref to emily as a byford living with her uncle william's family all the way through to 1881 census return then she moves down into hoddesdon herts and meets my gt gt grandfather. on the marriage cert she states her name as Neale and her father as Thomas Neale a bricklayer -very confusing! if anyone has any info on the Neales or Byfords of this area please get in touch. the occupation of most of the byfords were cab men and Neales where bricklayers.
red mail NEALE'S of kent road area 1800's
Hi i am trying to trace a family of NEALE'S . i have thomas neale who was born apx 1830 in southwark to parents thomas and elizabeth (nee wicks)possable grandmother rebecca Neale.. He and his father were Bricklayers.there is some confusion on thomas' daughter as he had emily Neale with frances Byford and the birth cert states that they were married but there is no record of this marriage and he turns up married to someone else at this time!Frances byford vanishes and no record of her death but was working for a marinners family on the 1851 census return so could have had child and then moved overseas???? The byfords and Neales where connected by siblings marrying each other. their daughter emily 1861 born old kent road. from what i can find out her mother frances byford disapears after the birth is reg and emily is brought up with her uncle william gardiner Byford under the surname Byford but on her marriage cert. in 1884 she is a Neale again and her fathers name is thomas Neale-confused is an understatement! if anyone has any info on the Byfords and Neales of this area please get in touch, many thanks
Jane Peake and Malcolm Gray
Jane Sophia Peake was baptised in 1790 at St George The Martyr, Southwark and married Malcolm Gray from Orkney in 1819 at St Mary Newington Surrey. Does anyone recognise these names? Particularly wondering why Malcolm was in Surrey. I now know that Malcolm was in the Royal Navy and presumably his ship docked in London. Can anyone shed more light on Malcolm himself, or know of any Royal Navy records from the early 1800s?
My father John Frederick Humphreys lived between the wars in Minnow Street, off the Old Kent Road, near the Thomas A' Beckett pub. His Mother's maiden name was Rouhan and his father Thomas John humphreys was alleged to come from Wales. Thomas's sister Alice married into the French family of costermongers/ fishmongers. Any information on the family would be gratefully appreciated. Maybe the French family have knowledge of Alices parents!
