red mail ELDRIDGE GOSDEN harland and descendants
Researching John JEFFKINS ELDRIDGE baptised Jan 10th 1874 St Mary Magdalene and St Denis Church, Midhurst, West Sussex. I believe that he was a wealthy butcher in the town of Midhurst later in life. John married Elizabeth DRAPER in 1801 at Chichester, St Olave, Sussex. Children: Mary Ann ELDRIDGE baptised 1802 Chichester, buried 24th September 1842 at Chichester St Pancras Lucy ELDRIDGE, Baptised 1804 Chichester, died Spinster, 4th July 1874, Buried 8th July 1874 Chichester St Peter the Great. John GOSDEN - see above - later married again on 28th November 1809 to Elizabeth HARLAND of Ripley Surrey Next child - presumably from wife number 2..... Elizabeth ELDRIDGE, Born 03 September 1810, baptised 03 October 1810 She went on to marry John GOSDEN - Farmer, Miller, and wealthy Race Horse Trainer who lived in Midhurst/Easebourne area of West Sussex.NOTE - I am particularly interested in this marriage - as John GOSDEN left my Grandfather Percy John ELDRIDGE (not, as far as I can ascertain John GOSDEN's "love child") £10, 000 in his eventual will - far and above the amount left to any other recipients. Why did he do this? And again, with his second wife Elizabeth (nee HARLAND): James ELDRIDGE born approx 1812, died 1870, buried 29 April 1882 Chichester St Peter the Great William ELDRIDGE, Born approx 1820, buried 14th Sept 1878 Chichester St Peter the Great. Looking again at all the above who were buried at Chichester St Peter the Great - all were shown on various Census as living at the Subdeanery of St Peter the Great Chichester. Is there any significance in this? Thanks for reading thus far. Regards.
