red mail COLER, formerly KOHLER
I am descended from the Kohler family, tracing them as far back as Dublin, to Kent and then to Lambeth. My G G G Grandad was Thomas Henry KOHLER born 1838 in Dublin. I can trace all but 2 of his children. Most, like my G G Grandad, Leopold, kept the name KOHLER but one Anglicised his entire name at the onset of WW1 and chose to be called Oscar COLER. The missing children are STANISLAUS KOHLER, born Clapham, London, 1878 and RICARDO KOHLER, born Ramsgate, Kent in 1876. Both are on the 1881 census with their parents and all but one sibling in Camberwell, London, and Ricardo is on the 1891 census in Paddington, London, with his mother Emma Kohler (nee OPPENHEIM)and 2 siblings. Oddly Thomas, his dad, is elsewhere in Paddington. From there on they disappear. I'm wondering if they too changed their names though I can find no trace of this. Does anyone have any COLER or KOHLER connections in the area please? We know that their brother, Stanley, born 1869, was shipped out to Canada in 1880 as part of the British Home Children Scheme yet cannot find any sign of either Stanislaus or Ricardo out there either. Any help or advice would be much appreciated and all information happily shared.

red mail frederick mercer lambeth
I am searching for the parents of my grandfather FREDERICK MERCER (Mechanical Engineer) According to 1901 Census he was born c.1869, living with his wife JANE E and family in Lambeth, London, both reported as born at Sandhurst Ed, Surrey (there is no such place). I have been unable to trace Jane E.’s history either. . Their marriage (?) appears not to have been registered, the GRO has no record; I have therefore been unable to ascertain their parents. Searches have been made around Sanderstead, Croydon and the Surrey History Centre, BMD etc The search for the “nephews” connection has also been unsuccessful. I have identified a number of Frederick Mercers born about 1870 and checked their family trees through to 1891, and 1901 census but found no links leading to Lambeth. Frederick Mercer died in Lambeth in 1903 in a hospice in Lambeth, but no useful information was contained in his death certificate. Frederick and Jane Mercer (nee Alder) were the parents shown on my father’s birth certificate issued Lambeth, London, in 1899.

red mail SPINSBY - London area
My G-g-grandfather was Frederick Spinsby b1844 Lambeth. he was a ragsorter, and a drunkard and was eventually murdered! Have census and bmd info about his children - but very little else. My G-grandfather Arthur Spinsby (b1873 Soho, London) is also a bit of an enigma. He served in India in the army at the turn of the century (no records found as yet)He married my G Gmother 7 years after her daughter (my grandmother) was born - so not likely to be her natural father.ANY information on Spinsby family gratefully received, especially as I live in the Middle East and am totally reliant on the internet!
red mail Rose elizabeth Bound/William charles Sandle

red mail Charles MARTIN, b 1847-9, Lambeth or Hackney?
Does anyone have any information about Charles? He was a 'coal porter' on the Thames, as confirmed in the marriage certificate (1903) we have of his son, William Charles Martin and Emily Sarah Cooper. (Charles was known as 'black daddy' within the family, presumably because he was always covered in coal dust!) In particular we'd like to know whether he was born in Hackney (according the to 1881 and 1891 censuses) or Lambeth (1901 census). At the time of the 1881 census he lived at Cottage Place, Lambeth (Civil Parish: No 1 North Marsh Ward, Ecclesiastical Parish: All Saints, married to Emma, with 5 daughters). By the 1891 census they were at 37 Duke Street. Charles is head of the family, with his wife, Emma (b abt 1851, Lambeth), children: Mary (1873), Katy (1875), Annie (1877), Lizzie (1879), Charles (1881), Frederick (1883), William (1885) and John (known as Jack, 1891). (The daughter, Emma, from 1881 is no longer shown.) In 1991 we find the 4 boys living with a widowed Charles at 36 Goding Street, Lambeth. We have his son William's death and marriage certificates but nothing for the rest of the family. I'm descended via William (b1885) who died in 1912 from a fall from ladder. He was a window cleaner. 2 of his brothers took on his round but we don't know which 2 and have no contact with descendants of any of Charles' other children. Any information about any of them would be much appreciated!
