Does anyone have any knowledge of a Arthur Bingham being adopted by a Simmons family in about 1860? This then Arthur Simmons at some time moved to Ayr in Scotland to be employed as a groom on the Craigie estate. At some time he and Jane Tuton were married producing two children Mary and George. Arthur simmons passed away after an operation for appendicitis in about 1907...9. Should you have any information I would be delighted to hear from you. thank you, Bill

Catherine MASON
I am trying to find out more about a marriage between Catherine Mason and Stephen Williams at St Nicholas' Church, Godstone, on 27th July 1746. Unfortunately the record gives no other information. They had 4 children, all baptised at St Mary Woolnoth in the City of London. I would like to establish whether her family were of Godstone. From what I know of Stephen Williams, he was a glover and linen draper in the City of London as well as having a calico printing works in Stratford, Essex. I suspect Catherine's father may well have been a merchant too, maybe with London connections, and would very much like to find out his name in case there is a will for him at the National Archives.

red mail Tull christening
Henry Herbert Tull was christened in Godstone on 19 December 1830, son of Thomas, born in Salisbury, and Mary, born in Ockham. An elder child, Sarah, had been christened in Ripley. The father became an Excise Officer in London, in the dock area, and Sarah married my great-grandfather, Thomas Fitch. They seem to have been simply passing through Godstone en route to London, perhaps working their way, but hopeful that another Tull researcher may see this. They do not seem to be related to the Berkshire Tull families. Thanks for reading this! Go well! Ivy.

Alice Marian/Marion Vickers
I'm looking for my maternal great-grandmother, Alice Marian or Marion Vickers, who married Alexander Cruickshank Brown in Durban on 3rd July 1901. No record of her birth exists but we suspect she and an Alice Marian Vickers, born at 23 Cambridge Buildings, Westminster, London in December 1879 may be one and the same. It is probable her family emigrated to South Africa in the 1880s. Her mother, also Alice Vickers, was born in Godstone, Surrey, ca. 1857 and Alice Marian had a brother, Sam, 6 years old at the time of the 1881 UK census. Interestingly, Alice Marian's mother is listed as a butler's wife but also head of the household at 23 Cambridge Buildings. No husband is listed so this may have been a family in domestic service to gentry who had sailed for Natal with their butler, Vickers. Once settled there, Vickers could have telegraphed his own family to join them, possibly in or around Dundee, Natal, where Alice Marion Vickers is now buried. Alice Marion Vickers followed her husband all over Natal (apparently he was either a foreman or engineer who built bridges), bore a daughter, Natalie Mary Brown (1903-1987) and died of peritonitis in 1913. Natalie always said her mother had been born in Godstone, but we now think she was referring to her grandmother. Natalie herself married Dr Comyn Duthie in Johannesburg in 1927 and they had three children: Ethne Mary Jean (my mother), Andrew Ewart and Alison Gillian. If anyone knows of a Vickers family, originally from Godstone, who went to South Africa in the 1880s, please get in touch.
