red mail KEEN, LAUGHLIN look-up please. Skeletons in the cupboard!
My Great Nan, Lillian (Lily) LAUGHLIN, nee Keen, married William Laughlin in 1913, in Camberwell. She apparently took into the marital home her two brothers, believed to have been called George and Alexander KEEN as their Mother had died. The odd thing is that on the 1901 census, my Great Nan is detailed to be living in Croydon, where she was Christened, with her parents, William Volney Keen and Emma Keen and her sister, Mabel Keen. However, there is no mention of either of the two brothers and her Mum was by this time 55 years old! My G-Nan was 18 on the 1901 census and her sister Mabel was 23. Surely the boys should be on the census by this time? Logic suggests that the boys couldn't have been born after the 1901 census given Emmas age at that date. We can't find any more on Mabel and my family have no knowledge of her existence, yet I am sure I have the right Keen family as I have checked both from the father forwards and from Great Nan backwards. My first thought was that the boys were not Emma's children at all but were the sons of her daughter, Mabel, hence no one spoke of Mabel. That however doesn't make sense as there are 2 boys... surely the family would have excommunicated Mabel upon the birth of the first if that was the case. One of the boys had sons who are now about 80, so the boys themselves would have been born at least a hundred years ago. Again, they would have had to have been born further back still to be the biological sons of a woman who was 55 in the 1901 census! Can someone please help me?! I'm very confused! I'd be very grateful if anyone could look up to see if they can find details of Mabels death/possible marriage, Emmas death and the dates of birth of my Great Nan's brothers. I'd be fascinated to find out the truth of this weird situation. Thank you very much.

red mail Harry Rivers
Harry Rivers Iram was born on 30 Oct 1846 in Croydon, England. Before 1873 he was a merchant seaman. The story has been told in the family that as a British merchant seaman, Harry Rivers got into a disagreement at sea with one of the officers and "jumped ship." It is believed he simply ran away when the ship docked in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and never returned, but no specific details have been found. Before 1890 he was railroad man with the Western Counties Railroad in Nova Scotia, Canada. While serving as a brakeman near Lake Jessie, he was badly injured trying to couple a locomotive to a train of flat cars. He was jammed between the tender and front car. He was taken to his residence nearWhitehouse's Corner, and the engine returned to Yarmouth for medical assistance for him. The services of Dr. J. L. R. Webster were engaged, and he was attended to. He recovered very slowly from the injury, but never fully regained his health. He later filled the position as station agent at Brazil Lake for a period of time. He died on 30 Aug 1890 in Annapolis, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, Canada. His place of death has also been shown as Annapolis Royal, also in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. He was buried after 30 Aug 1890 in South Ohio Hillside Cemetery, South Ohio, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was also known as Harry Rivers Iram or Henry Rivers Iram. Around 1873, following his untimely departure from a British merchant vessel, he changed his name to avoid being returned to his ship and likely prosecurtion. It was at this time that he changed his name to Harry Rivers Iram, though some sources show his first name as Henry. It is thought he picked out his new name from the Bible, by opening it and pointing to a verse where the Bible opened. It was Genesis 36:43, and referred to the clans of Edom, one of which was Iram. Spouse: Marian Axele (Mary) Cann. Harry Rivers Iram and Marian Axele (Mary) Cann were married on 19 Oct 1874 in Deerfield Baptist Church, Deerfield, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, Canada. They were married by Rev. Jason A. Stubbert. Children were: Henry Charles Iram, Cynthia Iram, Adelbert Rivers Iram, Jennie Mae Iram, Nellie Iram, Marion Iram, Frank Stanley Iram, Elma Lillian Iram.
