Searching for info re: Cobbold
I'm trying to piece together the Cobbold side of our family. My sisters are the great granddaughters of William Cain (1831-1914)who was originally Manx and who became a noted businessman in, including being Lord Mayor of, Melbourne in Australia. He returned to Europe b/w 1885-87, returning with his wife Sarah Jane, widow of W.H.Dixon and daughter of A.T.Cobbold, said to be from Ipswich, Suffolk. This couple had several sons and a daughter. One of the sons, William, was 'our' grandfather, born in Melbourne. He later married 'our' grandmother, Dorothy Cobbold, I believe from Suffolk. She had travelled as a young girl of about 6 with her parents (and siblings)to Argentina, but shortly thereafter her father died. I have a series of medallions she was awarded for sporting, lifesaving and academic achievements, some marked 'L'pool'. I don't know whether she and her cousin met and married in Australia or England. We have a painting of a "Cobbold House" and there appears to be a connection with John Constable. I would be thrilled to receive any information in order to explain their place in 'our' family tree and throw light on some unusual antiquities still in our possession. Kind regards, Rebecca
