red mail Background of West Huntspill and surrounding Villages - (West Huntspill - Somerset)
West and East Huntspill include the hamlets of Bason Bridge and Cote. Most early baptisms, marriages etc took place in what is, today, West Huntspill as the church there (St. Peters) goes back to 13th century. The church in East Huntspill (All Saints) was not built until 1839 which gave East Huntspill its separate identity. West Huntspill is on the main A38 road while East Huntspill is some two miles away but out in the countryside. Mark, the longest village in England at some three miles long, is about one mile away from East Huntspill, but the churches are at opposite ends. People from East Huntspill migrated to Mark and vice versa, so the two parish registers should be used together.

My paternal grandmother was Marguerite Ethel Johnson, who was the eldest child of John Charles Johnson and Elizabeth Ann Williams (Bedminster, Somerset). Marguerite married Sidney Stephen Page in Newport, Monmouthshire in 1908. I am interested in acquiring information on the Johnson family who lived in Weston in Gordano, Somerset just before and after 1900. Marguerite was christened in Portishead and had one sister, Mary Winifred Johnson, a school headmistress, and one brother, Alec Johnson, who died in WW1 and received the Mons Star. I believe John Charles Johnson originated from Arendal, Norway and his original name may have been John Carl Johnson; the Carl being Anglicised to Charles. He may have been a mariner and born around 1859. Records show his occupation in England as being a steward. Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated. I can help with other source information if any clues are needed. Thank you.
