Er Hezakiah was born in 1918 and Mary was born 1915, her father George was a watchmaker and jeweller. I have Frederick's birth certificate but no trace of him after birth. Gwen
My grandfather, George RUSSELL,was born in April 1840 at Yeovil's Red House Inn on the Dorchester road, to John RUSSELL and Sarah BARTLETT. In the 1851 census George is shown as an inmate in the Yeovil workhouse and, in the 1861 census, as working in the Oxford & Cambridge club in London's West End. This ties in quite nicely with the family legend that George was taken by a blind preacher to London where he became this gentleman's servant. However, I have not been able to discover why George was in the workhouse in the first place. I know that his father died in 1846, but I cannot discover what became of his mother. I hope to visit the Somerset Heritage Centre soon as they hold the workhouse records but would be grateful for any information as to whether Sarah, who was born around 1815-17, died, (or re-married) before 1851.

red mail family PENNY for your thoughts!
I am trying to trace certain of the scattered family of Henry Penny of West Camel, Somerset (1853- ) and Jessie Rowland of Upottery,Devon (1859-1936) who lived in the Yeovil area. The 10 children were Lucy Ann Penny (1882-1955), (Henry Penny 1884-), Edwin 'Ted' John Penny (1885, killed WW1), Albert Rumsey Penny (1886-) who emigrated to Canada, Adelina Bessie Penny (1889-1926) married Arthur Oliver Tucker and had daughter Gwendoline Ivy Tucker, Silas W. Penny (1880 killed WW1), Ernest Fred Penny (1892, killed WW1), Alice Clara Penny (1895- ) married Will Craig, Reginald Penny (1898, killed WW1), Frank Penny (1899- ) gassed in WW1. Family correspondence indicates that Frank, Reg and Clara were separated from the other children when small, most probably when their father, Henry, died on 11 December 1905. The youngest four children would have been about 6, 7, 10 and 12 years old. But where did they go (as census searches etc failed to locate them)? Family letters refer to a Mary (White?) who may have been a close relative or foster mother. The eldest child, Lucy Ann Penny (my ancestor) married George Lock(e) and founded the Kingweston Lockes. Delighted to share information.

red mail William A & Lily J Strachan
In the 1901 census, William Strachan is living with his wife Lily J Strachan. She came from Penzance, Cornwall, and he was a commercial traveller in biscuits. Their address was 19 Victoria Road, and it's looking likely that he was my great grandfather. The trouble is, he seems to have had more than one family, as he also shows up as being with my great grandmother in Taunton, on the same census night. My great grandparents weren't married, as he had already been married to an Ellen Elizabeth Dodds in 1877. On the census, his age looks like 40 and his place of birth is shown as London, all of which is correct for my ancestor. Has anyone any further information about this couple, as I have been unable to find a marriage reference for them.

red mail William Beale Collins
The 1901 census shows my grandfather William Beale Collins, his wife Sarah and seven children living at 3 Princes Street, Yeovil. He was a Printer & Bookseller. My father Gordon Beale Collins (b.1894) was the youngest child. I grew up believing he had just one brother Harold. The census shows he also had five sisters. Annie, Amy, Ethel, Gertrude and Mabel. If anyone has any information about these ladies or their decendants I would be very grateful. I know nothing of my father's early life prior to 1932 when he drove a Riley car from Durban to Johannesbugh, South Africa, breaking all previous records. He s ubsequently married and had seven children, he died in 1967. Through Curious Fox I was contacted in 2005 by the grandsons of Harold Beale Collins and have met a previously unknown cousin and a few second cousins. In February 2009 I was contacted by a granddaughter of Ethel. Through her I learned that my father had been married in 1922 to a lady named Blanche Margaret Hodgkins at Paddington Register Office. If anyone knows of this marriage and any subsequent family I would be very interested as so far we have not been able to find out whether there was a death or divorce. My parents married in 1934.and went on to have seven children.
red mail Family History
Does anyone have any information about the Marsh family which moved from Yeovil to Bedminster, Bristol, sometime around the turn of the 19th century? I am particulalrly interested in tracing the history of Frederick Marsh (I don't have his parents name)who was born in Bedminster, Bristol in 1875. The 1901 census has him listed living in Agate Street, Bedminster along with his brothers Charles (aged 27) who was born in Yeovil, Somerset, Albert (aged 20) and sister Alice, (aged 17). Frederick was married to Alice Bale and lived, amonst other places, in Warden Road, Bedminster, Cabot Street, Bedminster and Percy Street, Bedminster. Frederick was a carter who worked for a company called Cowper Passe in Mill Lane, Bedminster. Does anyone remember him? Have photos of him? Or know anything about him or his wider family? Also does anyone have any information regarding the death of a young girl, of Marsh descent, sometime in the 1940's or 50's in the St John's Lane area of Bristol(in theMalago toilets) - may have been a murder? Thanks in anticipation for anything you may have.
red mail A Birth in 1894
My father, Reginald Percy Coles, was born in Yeovil in January 1894. The on-line 1901 Census shows him, aged 7, living at 22 Queen Street. He is described as the 'grandson of Emily Coles', aged 48. This is where it gets interesting. There is no mention of my father's mother, Amelia Jane Coles, probably called just 'Jane', a housemaid in a large house in the town, who had become pregnant while unmarried. An unspeakable scandal in those days. I suspect she dumped the child with her mother. My father never knew who his father was, but there was some gossip, it seems, that it was the Congregationalist minister, Rev. Samuel Thodey Allen, who, unlike most of his kind, was wealthy, and could therefore afford the £1000 which was paid over to ensure that no more was ever said about it. But I stress that while Rev. Allen's residence in Yeovil at that time has been confirmed, the rest of what I have written is speculation. It's over a hundred years ago. To find my paternal grandfather now isa very long shot Ñ so long as to be most likely unbridgeable. But very odd coincidences DO happen, I've found, and I'm posting this entry just in case somebody out there is in possession of information I have never had.
