Bardon House Ghost!
There is said to have been a ghost at Bardon House in past times. Was this MARIA LEIGH born at Berlin 11 August 1749 reputed to have been the illegitimate daughter of HENRY BILSON LEGGE and one of the ladies-in-waiting at the court of Frederick the Great? (various dates fit this hypothesis). Married at St Martin in the Fields on 19 May 1770 to ROBERT LEIGH 1734 - 1798 Attorney, of Bardon House, Washford. Maria died at her son's house in Taunton on 23 September 1828 and was buried at St. Decuman's Church, Watchet on 30 September 1828. How, Why and When did Maria come to this country? Is there anyone with knowledge of the court of Frederick the Great who could tell me how to find out how much of the story of Maria's origins are true? Henry Bilson Legge later the Earl of Dartmouth married MARY STAWELL who is known to have been on calling terms with the Leighs at Bardon House in the early 1800s. Maria was intensely musical, and one of Bardon's ghosts is said to have been the sound of a piano playing somewhere in the house though no one ever tracked the sound down - the family were told that it was our "Prussian ancestress" but never to mention this as it would alarm the servants and they would leave!
