I am trying to gather any information about the following event. In 1806 JAMES WHEELER from a village near to Moorlinch, Somerset, who won a bet which involved him harvesting 10 acres of grass without taking liquor. His winnings were ten shillings. There is in existence a certifacate commemorating the occasion.
Looking for 1861/1871 census and ANY connections to, FRANCIS (WALTER) WHEELER( b.Bridgwater 1849) AND his mother JANE WHEELER nee PRICE b. Bridgwater 1813/21 (Her brothers James, Francis and John Price of Chilton Polden) the 2nd wife of CHARLES WHEELER of Moorlinch, who was transported 1841. Two children born by 1840 Thomas and Eliza in Moorlinch area. Charles was 1 of 8 children of JOSEPH WHEELER & AMELIA WILTSHAW. FRANCIS thought to be the apprentice baker to WILLIAM COOMBS at Othery in 1861. By 1881 he is in Birmingham. (Charles Wheelers' first marriage was to Sussanna Churches (who died 1/6/1835) they had one son Frederick.
red mail TURNER, Edith, Moorlinch b abt 1774
Edith married John PORTER but I know absolutely nothing about her family. Are the Turner family from Moorlinch or from further afeild? Are there any Turners still living there? I have looked in all the usual places. Any assistance would be appreciated.
red mail PORTER, John b abt 1779, Moorlinch
John PORTER, farmer, married Edith TURNER in 1798 and they had at least 6 children. But I know nothing any further back than that with the Porters. Probably of farming stock as my grandmother said they were " of yeomanry stock". I have information from this time downwards but nothing about where John PORTER came from. The name is common around this part of Somerset which makes it even more confusing. Any help would be appreciated!
red mail MITCHELL, William of Moorlinch
I am looking for the ancestors of William MITCHELL born about 1783 and possibly married Jane(unknown). I believe they had at least two children William and Edith. I would like to know more about William and Jane. Edith MITCHELL married John PORTER farmer of Moorlinch in 1836 and I have the rest from there on down.

Working of the COOMBES familes as follows. Need help with ANCESTRY of JAMES and MARY and JAMES and BETTY and mother of James called husband for her. They lived and worked on a farm called Polden Hills....maybe there were more than one farm there....but the following is what I have. Frank COOMBS 1849 married Frances LAVER of SOMERTON...they eloped in 1860's to Canada after they were wed in Bridgewater. I have their wedding photo...they share cropped on farms in Ontario and eventually had 12 children of their own and a farm in the Townsend Township of Norfolk County. The Coombs line I follow is through Frank's family as follows--parents-- William Coombes abt 1811 - married first Alice Miller and had 3 children with her; married second Ann Beake( my ancestor wife)born 1823; he married Ann 1844 after Alice had died. She took over her three children, her one and they added 9 more to total 13. I do not have the ancestry of Alice Miller. The only parents I have for Ann Beake are William 1798 Westonzoyland- 1859 Bridgewater;his wife was Elizabeth born 1798 in Clayhidon. They had a large family; found by Percy Beake of Oxford, retired archivist, now deceased. The BEAKE family records need help; has anyone ever heard of these people and can help me? William Coombes family goes something like this---parents- James 1800 and Mary 1797(Names from William's death record.) Parents of James--James and Elizabeth AKA Betty. The last James's mother is Mary 1771-1844. Whether her husband was James also is not known. There seems to be alot of James in this line and it is confusing. AS far as I know William, his parents and grandparents all worked and lived on a farm in the Polden Hills. Can anyone help me sort this out? I have a few pictures.
