red mail Howell in Weston Rhyn/Oswestry area - (Weston Rhyn - Shropshire)
My GG-grandfather William Howell was born 22 Jul 1806 in Salop (possibly Weston Rhyn) per family records and lived in Cefn Mawr in he early 1840s. At that time, he was with his first wife Elizabeth Edwards (b. 1808), who died of consumption in 1841 in Cefn Mawr per the death certificate. I have a record of a William Howell and Elizabeth Edwards married in Llanyadwaladr, Denbighshire, Wales on 03 May 1833, though no confirmation this is actually them. They had two children William (b. 03 Feb 1834) and Anne (b. 09 Jan 1836). I have a transcription of a family diary that says they lived in Llangollen, but the historical records point down the road (possibly on Llangollen Road) per the maps in Cefn Mawr or perhaps LLangollen Rural. Because of repeated changes in county administrations, 1841 census records and may parish records for Cefn Mawr are now "lost". It appears GG-grandfather William Howell (at least, if not more of the family) was nonconformist Baptist. I've recently located and ordered some Baptist parish and monument transcription records from the area, but they yileded nothing. William re-married, this time to Sarah Howell, his first cousin. On a possible marriage certificate located for that(2 May 1843 in the Baptist Chapel in Oswestry) he listed his father, also named William Howell, as a laborer. New wife Sarah is listed as living in Oswestry at the time (occupation spinster) and her father is listed as Richard Howell (collier). Witnesses are Thomas Morris and Margaret Thomas. GG-grandfather William Howell had a half-brother Thomas. I have no idea of the last name. He also had a half-sister - no name given - who helped raise William's children when their mother Elizabeth died. William & Sarah emigrated to the US in 1845. "Thomas' father" had "just died" as of 1847 when William sent for him to bring William and Ann to the US. Thomas and his mother (I assume William's mother as well) put the children on a boat in Liverpool, but did not accompany them due to the mother's age and Thomas' unwillingness to leave her alone. I have found christening records that are a close match for William (27 Jul 1806 William s. of William and Eliz. Howell, born 20 Jul 1806. Weston). I have also located records (per "Marriages May 1785 to Nov 1812") where a William Howell married Elizabeth Richards on 01 Jan 1806 at Llanymynech, St. Martins Parish, St Asaph diocese. This record is also confirmed by Pallot's Marriage Index for England: 1780-1837. I don't know if they are William's parents, but their marriage was 6 months prior to GGFather William Howell's birth, so perhaps they got married once she found she was pregnant? I have no idea when the elder William or his wife (assume Elizabeth) died, or whether they got divorced. If any of this story or these people are familiar in your fanily history, please respond. Thanks very much.
