red mail Whiteside and Leitch
Looking for information regarding my ancestors: Samuel James Whiteside apparently born in County Antrim, Ireland but married to Eliza Leitch of Greenock. Samuel Whiteside was born abt 1799 in Ballymena, Ireland and is listed in the 1861 Scotland Census as resident/inmate of the Greenock Lunatic Asylum in Greenock West aged 61. He died abt 1865 in Greenock. Eliza Leitch was born abt 1799 in Greenock and died 1861 in Greenock. Children of the marriage appear to be: Mary born 1832 in Antrim, Ireland. D 1875 in Greenock Samuel b 1836Ballymena Ireland D 1838 Ballymena Samuel James (my Great Grandfather b 1838 Ballymena, Ireland d 1906 in New Zealand. Elizabeth b 1840 Ballymena, Ireland d abt 1875 Greenock. Ann born abt 1843 Antrim, Ireland d abt 1875 Greenock. With all children appearing to have been born in Ireland, perhaps Samuel Whiteside had been married to someone else before coming to Greenock in Scotland and marrying Eliza leitch. This is all a mystery as I've been unable to trace Samuel or the children before Greenock. I do have marriage details which seem to match the daughters: Mary married to John May. Elizabeth married to Samuel Sloan and Ann married to Edward Hynds. Of course Samuel James was married. This was to Bertha Isteed. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. For instance, was the Greenock West Asylum strictly for mentally disturbed patients or did it also house paupers? Does anyone have information on the Whiteside or Leitch families of Greenock or Greenock West or their descendants?

red mail Rev. Daniel Cock, 1717
I am looking for information to add to what I already have about Rev. Daniel Cock. On his gravestone it reads that he was "a native of Clydesdale, Scotland and was ordained (in 1752) to the office of the holy divinity of Greenock." He was born in Cartsdyke in 1717, married Alison Jamison in Edinburgh in 1754. Alison was the daughter of Patrick Jameson, a dean of Masons. Their children born in Scotland were William 1755, Patrick 1757, Mary Ann 1759, Christiann 1762, Robert 1765 and Ebenezer 1769, probably all born in Clydesdale. He came to Nova Scotia; in response to a "call" issued by the Township of Truro; he returned to Scotland and brought his family to NS in 1772. He was accompanied by a friend John Christie who was born in Roxburgshire in 1739. He attended Edinburgh University. His son, William, was called a Captain.

red mail Given & Williamson from Greenock
I am searching for my Grandmother's people. Elizabeth Given was born about 1900, to Alexander Given & Rebecca (nee Williamson). She worked as a maid/cook for a Mrs Margaret Taylor, who lived in Brisbane St Greenock, before immigrating to Australia circa 1920. My Grandmother's siblings were: Ruby (unmarried), Sandy (Alistair) (unmarried), Maude (married Frank Doherty), Charlotte/Mary (died aged about 6). Alexander & Rebecca eloped: Rebecca was from a strict Episcopalian family, and was one of three girls, her parents were John Williamson & Rabeca Ray. (My Grandmother usd to refer to 'John Williamson of the Rock', which apparently refers to a shipwreck that he survived as a cabin boy...?!) I believe that the Givens also have some connection with Portrush & Portstuart in N.Ireland. Alexander Given's parents were John Given and Elizabeth Curtis. (Alexander's siblings were Alexander, Mary, Charlotte, Annie (unmarried, immigrated to Canada, died in flu epidemic in 1912) and Hessie/Cassie. (Hessie immigrated to New Zealand, her son Thomas was killed in WW1).) I would so appreciate any assistance or advice!
