James Hood - (Rhynd - Perthshire)
James Hood (b. 10 Dec 1818 to William Hood and Mary Speedy in Elcho, Rhynd) may have been the father of my ggrandmother Mary Hood, daughter of Margaret McKillop (b. 1821 Abernethy, d. 1846 Kinnoull). When Mary Hood married David Rodger in Kinnoull in 1866, she identified her father as James Hood, Labourer; he seems to have been still alive at the time. Her death registration (Forfar 1891) identifies him as John Hood, Water Bailiff. It seems likely that the given name on the marriage registration was the correct one (no-one in Forfar, Mary's adopted home, would have known her father). The 1841 census shows James Hood living at Glenfoot of Abernethy House with his father and mother, and working as a Linen Hand Loom Weaver - an occupation many were abandoning around that time because of automation. It's therefore no surprise to find him working as a Game Keeper in 1851, still living in Glenfoot, Abernethy, but now with his wife Barbara Beattie, his son William Hood, 2, and his in-laws. I can't find James Hood in the 1861 or 1871 censuses; his death reg (Perth 7 May 1873) confirms that he was the widower of Barbara Beattie - and a River Watcher, or Water Bailiff. Apparently he and Margaret McKillop never married. I would be interested to contact, and share information with, anyone researching the Hood family or descended from it.
CAMPBELL ROSEMOUNT - (Rosemount - Perthshire)
As I'm doing this from New Zealand not sure if I've got the right Rosemount. Does anyone have any information on a Barbara Campbell of Ayr who married Captain James Morris (James was the Captain of the Steamboat "The Tempest" lost at sea on a return voyage from New York February 1857) at the time of the lodgement of James's will in 1859 Barbara Campbell's place of Residence is recorded as sometimes John Street, Glasgow and "Rosemount" in the parish of Kirksowald in the county of Ayr. I have a record of two sons, John and James Houston who emigrated to New Zealand (have no dates for them yet) and a daughter (Barbara Campbell Morris born I believe 1845) who followed them, and married in New Zealand in 1873. Any help would be appreciated.

red mail McLaren - St Fillans - (St Fillans - Perthshire)
Peter McLaren married Mary Cameron on 7 April 1826. On 1841 census he was 70 (but possibly up to 75 as ages were rounded down in this census)- and was a drover. He & Mary had Donald b. 1827, John b 1832 & Mary b 1840. Peter must have died pre 1851 as not on that census, but have not found any burial or other detail for him. Was this Peter's first marriage?? (he would have been 56 plus in 1826 - a late starter!) Did Mary junior marry?? Donald listed as unmarried in 1871. John married Jessie Stenhouse at Alva in 1863 - they migrated to New Zealand. Does anyone know who Peter's parents were?

Mary Ramsay (1887-1968) m. Thomas Robertson James (1889-1950) *Alexander is my great grandfather. He and Elizabeth Ann Davidson ((1877-1968), from Cairnie by Huntly, immigrated to America, married Harry Hopkins (1850-1934) from Dartford, Kent, three children by this marriage (Evangeline, David, Harry)) had a child they gave up for adoption, Jessie Elizabeth Foot (1914-2004). Jessies name was changed to Blanche B. VanDyne when she was adopted. She was adopted because Elizabeths husband Harry was in England for a long stretch and Alexander Foote was keeping an eye out for her (ummm, yes). None of Elizabeths legitimate children had any children themselves, and neither did Alexander Foote, who married a couple years later. Im looking for live family who never knew about us and also looking to fill in some gaps. Even more so since I found a picture of Elizabeths daughter, Evangeline, who looks so much like me at that age.
