red mail Jane Liddell
I am studying my convict ancestry and i am researching Jane Liddell (liddle) who was born circa 1806. She was convicted of Larceny 3rd July 1850 at the Hexham quarter sessions in Northumberland and sentenced to 14 years and transported to Van Diemen's Land arriving 10th August 1851. It was mentioned in her court records that she was a widow and left 5 children behind in North Shields and her native place was York Yorkshire. She married my 1st cousin 5 x removed Charles Thorpe in 1854 in Tasmania and passed away 25th March 1875 at the New town Pauper Establishment, Tasmania Australia. Her parents maybe Anthony and Elizabeth. I am hoping someone on here may recognise all or parts of this information and may be able to assist in supplying me with any prior information about her before her transportation and what may have happened to her children. Regards Janet
red mail Information on Martha Rooney/Roney
Wondering if anybody could help me trace my 4x Great Grandmother, Martha Rooney/Roney. Originally born in Ireland, 1843 (info found via census), she lived in Newcastle in 1871 & 1881 working as a fish curer. Her son, John William Rooney was born in Newcastle in 1872 and by 1891 he was lodging in North Shields with an Irish family named McGee. On the birth certificate it states that John William's parents are Martha Roney and William Graham. in 1889, Martha Roney's death was registered in North Shields by Mary Ann McGee, who lived in the same street as Martha at the time she had died. It says that Martha lived at 23 Charlotte Street and that she was the widower of Matthew Rooney. I have been unable to trace a birth or a marriage for Martha Rooney/Roney and would appreciate any help anybody could give me. Thanks, Olivia

I previously asked for any information about Samuel's parents and have gratefully received many replies . If anyone has info about his grandparents, Will and Mary TALBOT, and William and Margaret PARKER, I would be grateful. I know Mary Talbot (nee NESS) was a widow when she and Will married in 1831. I think her maiden name was ELLIOTT but, other than that, I've hit the brick wall. Any further info would be gratefully received.
red mail St Cuthbert's (RC) Church and School
I'm researching St Cuthbert's Church and Primary School in North Shields and would be interested in any stories, reminiscences or photos anyone has. The school buildings were on the corner of Albion Road and Cecil Street, where the Catholic Social club now stands. The only building that remains from the original site is the Convent house, fronting onto Albion Road. The school was amalgamated with the St Joseph's boys school in the 60's, in Lovaine Terrace (Place?). The Church was on the corner of Bedford Street and Albion Road, and was demolished. The new church was built on what was called Canon Kinleyside's Orchard in Spring Gardens, further down Albion Road. The School operated from the 1890's to the 1960's, and every generation of my family attended, right up to the day it was closed. Any help would be appreciated.

Clark?), sister of the GG remained in North Shields and we have a picture of her, taken by M. Auty Artist and Photographer Studio at 20 Front Street, Tynemouth, Northumberland, England, United Kingdom about 20 Dec 1889. red mail Captain William Downie HALL & friends
The following story concerns William Hall, and his presumed local Tyneside friends - Armstrong Ritchie HALL, William DOWNIE and Benjamin DODD. William HALL was married in Tynemouth Registration District to Eliza Jane PINE b1817 Exmouth, Devon (the daughter of a mariner). They had various children at different coastal ports but on census returns Eliza and the children are at Exmouth with her mother - William Hall always absent away at sea. c 1851/2 William and Eliza had a daughter Mary Hall born Birkenhead. c1852 William HALL captained a ship 'Fortesque' to Australia but on his return in November 1853 it appears, he bigomously married Elizabeth Pilgrim WALTERS at Clifton, Bristol. Leaving her in England he returned to Australia as Captain of the Eblana with his friends from Tyneside on board. Armstrong Ritchie HALL in 1841 was a grocer in Tynemouth, by 1851 he was married, a tea dealer and commercial traveller living in Birkenhead. Benjamin DODD b1830 Tyneside but married in Birkenhead in May 1853. Also Tyneside born William DOWNIE. It appears the men returned to England to collect their wives and then set up home in Victoria, Australia. William and Elizabeth settled c1855-1860 near Ballaret, and William tried his luck as a gold miner. They had three children. Then William tired of life on land and returned to sea. As captain of the sail steamer Ruby he was drowned in Bluff Harbour, New Zealand on 5th October 1863. His 2 widows were left to raise various children both in England and Australia. I would love to hear from anyone who knows of the forebears of the HALL, DOWNIE, and DODD families of Tyneside.
