Formerly of Haltwhistle and of 8 Alexandra Terrace, Hexham at the time of his death during WW1 (1917 Arras, France). George Reay' parents were Thomas and Jane and his siblings were siblings were John, Thomas, Isaac, Jane Annie, Hugh, Eleanor and Catherine. My maternal grandmother, Eleanor, named her first child George (born 1920) in memory of her late brother. I understand that my paternal Grandmother Ellen Snowball nee Little worked at the Hydro in Hexham which I believe was near my Grandmother's home in Millfield Terrace,Hexham,I would appreciate it if anyone can tell me anything about the Hydro,I would be grateful for ANY info.I am clutching at straws with this as I am unsure when my Grandmother was employed there,her Husband died in 1917 when she was left to raise 2 sons alone,maybe this was perhaps a time of her employment here.

I'm researching my great-uncle,Ivatt Wright born 1887 at Anick and was killed in the Great War,Passchendaele 20th Sept.1917.His mother and father were Charles and Margaret Wright and he worked whilst he was living in Hexham, for Mr FG Grant at the Hydropathic as a gardener.He went to Ashington coal mines in 1913 before enlisting in the Northumberland Fusiliers at Bedlington in Sept.1914.Anything by him such as photos,etc would be very much appreciated.

Looking for any information of where Joseph (born in 1836,son of Benjamin and Isabella Hamilton of Hexham) and Mary (born in 1834,daughter of Isaac and Mary Newton of West Allen)and their children would have gone. They were living at Gilesgate in the 1881 census and cannot be found in any English records after that. Their oldest son, Benjamin Wree, born in 1862, is my great great grandfather. After his marriage in 1886 he and his wife went to Australia and then returned to England in 1892. Nothing is known of what happened to his parents and siblings Elizabeth (born 1858), Joseph William (born 1865), Edwin Isaac (born 1867) and Amy Hannah (born 1869). (His sister Mary Isabella born in 1861 stayed in England and lived in County Durham.) Did they go to Australia as well and stay?

my grandfathers birth cert gives his place of birth as Holy Island Hexham. I don't know if this is a house , street, or area . I believe it was near the tannery ? Gilesgate area. Hi does anyone have in their tree a James Snowball born around 1776, but where I do not know. In 1818 James and his wife Ann, were living in Greenwich London and had one daughter Rebecca Martha born 20 June 1818. Rebecca Martha married Samuel Nicholas Spooner and it is through this line that my family came from. On 1841 Census James is still living in Greenwich he is 65 yoa, but Ann(wife) has died. As the surname appears mainly in the North,and North East/West I just thought I would try Hexham as a starter.

His father was William, he later lived in Carlisle (Cumbria) where I find him from 1881, Married to Rachel Lewis born 1858. Children born in Carlisle were James Cowen (John James)born 1885. William Bates (1778-1835??) was a local land surveyor in Hexham and would later be the owner of the Hexham foundry (which apparently closed at his death in 1835). He married Mary Errington and one of his children migrated to Australia in the 1850's, from whom I am descended.
