I am looking for information on Thomas Nicolson (Nichollson) (Nicholson) who married Elizabeth Craike 29 June 1573, Berwick upon Tweed. If anyone can help me to confirm his date & place of birth, & if possible his later date & place f death I would be most grateful.
John Tate or Tait
In Berwick in the late seventeen hundreds John Tate was apprenticed to a Grocer John Bird. At a later date he joined the Royal Navy, and in 1807 he married Mary Lewin in Prittlewell, Essex. In 1827 he was lost at sea when his ship went down off Greenland and I am trying to find out more of John's earlier life, including who were his parents. If anyone has any information on John Tate, or even Grocer John Bird, I would be glad to hear from them.

Looking for John Douglass, possibly father of Robert (1814-1847) Robert's eldest son called John suggests that this may be Robert's father's name. I cannot find any parents or siblings for Robert but his second daughter called Isabella Skelly Douglass suggests that Robert's mother may have been Isabella Skelly. I am relying heavily on the naming pattern used extensively in this and the Skelly family. I speculate that Robert's father John may have been born 1790. Only recently started so not much to go on but here goes. My father Leslie wakenshaw (DOB 1945) has one brother Robert (DOB 1946/7) and two sisters, Christine (DOB 1950) and Alison (DOB 1948). Robert and girls were surname Storey. Fathers' Mother was Alison father unknown. She had three brothers, Robert who married Alice and live in Tweedmouth somewhere and William who married Ann in Newcastle but has passed on and Alex who married Jean in Portsmouth and has passed on. Does anybody have any details of John Motherill or Motherhill who was born at Berwick-upon-Tweed on 5th November 1761? He was a tailor and was briefly famous in 1786 in connection with a criminal case tried in that year after which he was nicknamed 'the Brighton Taylor'. Any information at all, especially concerning his death and any descendants will be much appreciated.

Alexander married Mary Ann in Berwick on Tweed, Northumberland - date unknown. Their son John Alexander (1836-1896) married Jane Jackson in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland in 1854. John and Jane then produced 6 children, most of which were born in Scotland but eventually settled in Newcastle. I am trying to establish whether this family was of Scottish or English ancestry as the earliest information I have puts them living in North Northumberland, on the border of Scotland. He was a tailor journeyman and returned to Scotland for a number of years before settling in Newcastle permanently.They had 6 children, born mostly in Scotland. I have no information on his parents. I am seeking information on the Dudgeon family of Berwick, especially Margaret Dudgeon b 1866 daughter of Robert Dudgeon (farmer) and his wife Margaret, nee Thompson. Robert was born in 1823 and Margaret in 1826, both in Berwick. Robert was the son of John & Elisabeth Dudgeon (John b 1786 and Elizabeth in 1791). The 1841 census shows John & ELizabeth living in Castlegate. The 1851 census shows Robert & Margaret living in Poor House Lane. By the time, their daughter, MARGARET DUDGEON was born they were living in Featherbed Lane. She married Alexander Russell of Newcastle. Other members of this family were either bakers or fishmongers. As far as I can ascertain members of the Dudgeon family were still in Berwick up until WW2. Any information appreciated. thank you.

I'm researching the RUSSELL family of Berwick Upon Tweed, my great grandfather was Robert RUSSELL (1851-1895) who was married to Annie CROMBIE (1854-1914)they had 10 children. Robert's father was William RUSSELL (1825-1890) a shoemaker who states in the census that he was born in Scotland but gives no clue as to where, I believe I have found him in Liverpool in the 1841 census as a journeyman, he married Agnes Gilchrist WILSON(1829-1910)around 1849 although I can't find any record of it, they had 9 children and I believe Agnes' parents were Robert WILSON and Mary ELLIOTT but have yet to prove it. I should like to hear from anyone researching these families with a view to exchanging information

Does anyone have any earlier information on the following: William Souter date and place of birth and death unknown who married Margaret (Thompson?). Margaret appears in the 1841 census in Berwick upon Tweed and has a daughter Mary born c. 1811 living with her. Margaret Thompson Souter born c.1806 Berwick upon Tweed married Alexander Broomfield in Charlton, Kent 30 July 1837. Edward Charles Souter born c.1814 lived in Paddington London in 1861, 1871, 1881. He married Elizabeth Pearson in 1839 and had a son John Morrison Souter. After Elizabeth's death, he married Jane Taylor Jenkins. Apparently, the Souters moved back to Scotland. Family oral history says the Souters came from Arbroath. Is this so and how did William come to be in Berwick upon Tweed? Was he in the army? Margaret met Alexander in Woolwich. Alexander was in Canada in the Royal Artillery between 1826 and c.1834 and married to Elizabeth Jacques? Any information would be gratefully received.

His father was also Thomas and TWA left Berwick in the late 1840's to live in the Black Country, it is thought he ran away with thr Provsts daughter! I'm researching the family of John McQueen, b1789 at Berwick, married 1. Mary Hall (b.? d.circa 1827/8) at Belford on 25th Aug 1810, 2. Grace ?, (b circa 1895 Northumberland -acc. to 1841 census, d. 1844) at Paxton Toll, Scotland, in 1828 and 3. Eleanor Grant, widow 1857. He died 18th Dec 1860. Grace's family name may have been Middlemass as their first daughter is Margaret Middlemass McQueen baptised 19th March 1820 at Holy Trinity, Berwick. John McQueen was made a Freeman of Berwick on January 7, 1811 and is noted as "second son of John". His father seems to be John McQueen, gardener, b. circa 1760 at Berwick upon Tweed (made Freeman on Oct 25th 1784 after apprenticeship to Robert Nesbit, Gardener). I am looking for details of the children and grandchildren of this couple, who married 8th May 1897 at the Register Office, Berwick. Wilhelmina was usually referred to as Minnie. It is known that she died as a result of Flu in 1924 and that Thomas remarried to Alice Annie Bailey formerly Palmer, a divorced woman. Alice had the children baptised into the catholic faith. It is known that Thomases father was named James, and so was Wilhelmina's. They had a large family, but not all children survived. The children known of include Edith Irvine b. 1899, Christian (female) b. 1891, Lilian b. 1920, Isabella Moffat Irvine b. 1913, Joseph b. 1915, Allan b. 1912,David Reggie b. 1917. Berwick on Tweed - Parson & White - Durham - 1827/8 - p 366/7 Dispensary: The hand of benevolence in Berwick is not merely extended for the purpose of disseminating knowledge amongst the poor inhabitants, but it also affords pecuniary & other assistance in cases of sickness & distress, for the alleviation of which here are several charitable institutions, at the head of which stands the Dispensary, which was instituted in 1814, for the purpose of affording medical & surgical aid to the lame & sick poor. Though the medical gentlemen of Berwick give their service to this benevolent institution, it annual expenditure generally amounts to about £130, out of which a yearly salary of £25 is paid to Mr Johnson Haw,the dispenser; but its receipts seem to be more than adequate to its disbursements, for, according to its last report, the charity possess a stock amounting to nearly £600. The Poor House: which is the legal asylum of the indigent inhabitantsof Berwick, often contains about 1000 inmates. It stands in a healthy situation in Castlegate, & was formerly used as a sacking manufactory, but it is now fitted up in a comfortable & commodious manner for its present purpose, & has, as w...

Douglas Family
Looking for information on the Douglas family of Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland. Daniel Douglas was born 1857, son of John Douglas, a shoemaker. Daniel married Isabella Hay Purves at Berwick in 1880. Her father was John Purves who was also a shoemaker. Daniel and Isabella moved to Sunderland, County Durham shortly after 1881. I have info on the Sunderland connection but would like more from the Berwick upon Tweed side.
