Silverstone - (Silverstone - Northamptonshire)
Whitlock is a very popular name in Silverstone. I have found a John Whitlock the son of Clara Whitlock. His name appears in a World War 1 Memorial (Register number 21) all entries are listed from Surnames initial W. Headed Thiepval Memorial Franceand bears the names of Soldiers and Sailors who fell fighting on the somme and the Ancre, from the United Kingdom and South Africa, who's grave was unknown. John fell on the 24th of August 1916, it says 25 years of age. I have looked into the 1901Census and the only John Whitlock, son of Clara, in Silverstone was at that point aged but 9 years. This would make his father John Henry Whitlock, but this is not proof he is the same John, but as I couldn't find another, it would point in that direction. In 1901 John Henry was 42 years of age and Clara 41. They had three children living at home at this time, the eldest being Lily Sarah (15) then John Thomas (9) and James G Whitlock (4). This would make John some 5 or 6 years younger!

On the road from Aiesworth to Sutton there is a bend this is where the road follows the track of Ermine Street the Roman Road. When I used to visit as a boy there were steps and what appeared to be a stone trough which according to local legend always contained water even in the driest of conditions. I must admit that whenever Ivisited the spotit had water in it. My father would tell me that the trough was really a drinking place for a half man half beast creature and he (my father ) referred to the place as "The Shagfold" Can can any one throw anymore light on this particular spot?
