red mail Further to my last post
I've done a bit of sleuthing since my last post on the Linklaters and have now found proof that John Linklater was the brother of my great-grandfather James Linklater. In 1863 he went to Scotland to oversee the launching of the SS Wanganui & to bring it back to NZ. While he was away news was received in NZ that he had passed his captaincy examination - in the index of the Lloyd's of London 'Captains Registers' is listed one John Linklater b.1827 Leith, became a captain at Leith in 1863. Next one to track down is his other brother Magnus Linklater who was also listed in the index as being born in Leith 1836 & became a captain at Shields in 1865. Just which 'Shields' it is referring to is a mystery in itself! I believe that Magnus could very well be the Captain Linklater who was the master of 'The Ocean Mail' ship that was lost in the China Seas in 1864, the newspaper account said Captain Linklater was the last to leave the ship so he must have survived the sinking and later went on to pass his examination in 1865. Anyone with any information on a Captain Linklater who was on China clippers around that time please get in touch.
red mail Linklaters in South Leith
In 1826 Magnus Linklater married May McKay in North Leith, Edinburgh, May was the daughter of John McKay, Town Officer. Their first five children were baptised in North Leith & the last two in South Leith were they were all living in the 1841 census. Their youngest, James born 1842 was my great-grandfather, sometime between 1851 & 1871 he migrated to New Zealand where he married Mary Elizabeth Williscroft. I have found information on most of his siblings over the years but two of them had always eluded me until now, they are: John bn 1827 & still at home in 1841, and Magnus bn 1837 & still at home in both 1841 & 1851. I have found no deaths for either of them and no further mention in any of the UK census or Scotland records. Recently I've found information on a John & a Magnus who were seamen and captains of various ships. Magnus it seems might have been a sea captain on China Clippers and married Marion someone & settled in China, they may have had at least two daughters named Marion & Florrie. John might have also come to NZ and been a sea captain on various ships that plied their trade around the coasts of NZ, they earliest I've found him in NZ is 1861 on the 'Tyne'. In 1863 he went to Dundee to oversee the building and fitting out of the SS Wanganui and brought it back to NZ where it traded between Wellington & Wanganui. In Nov 1875 he was appointed to the command of the Brig "Britain's Pride" which traded between Wellington & Hobart Town in Australia. In Jun 1876 the ship left Hobart Town for Wellington and was never seen again, they believe it foundered in a storm and went down with the loss of all lives. John left a widow in Wellington and there is a headstone for him in the Wanganui Old Cemetery 'June 1876 Captain John Linklater 49 Brig Britain's Pride'. That's about as much as I know of John & Magnus so would love to hear from anyone who knows anything about either of them. Or indeed any of the Linklater family from South Leith and before that possibly Orkney. Magnus (their father) we think was born in Lady, Sanday about 1799, not to be confused with another Magnus born same time same place who married Elizabeth Muir and migrated to Canada. Cheers.....dawn, nz
