I am trying to establish some background on my great grandfather alexander ANDERSON who was born in, or around, Dalkeith in about 1839. His fathers name was John ( no record of mothers name) and my understanding is that he was orphaned and placed in an orphanage from which he ran away and eventually made his way to Australia in about 1856. Needing some understanding of what life would have been like for someone in these circumstances back then. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

My 4x Grt Grnd father - Francis MacKay - was the blacksmith in dalkeith from about 1826 onwards. Born in lanark abt 1802 and died in dalkeith between 1861 and 1871. Looking for any family of my ancestors, My GG grandfather William Wilson or Wilson William was born in Edinburgh in 1806, his brothers & sister were Robert,James & Mary. He left Scotland around 1835 0r 36 for the USA. he setteled in upstate New York, and had 12 children. I think his brother James worked for the Kirk on Glebe Street in Dalkeith . Looking for entries in trade directories for the period 1871 - 1901 describing Lawsons Grocers shop in Dalkeith, The family lived at Orchard Vale, The Glebe (now Glebe Street) until Alexander's death in 1893. Any information regarding this family would be useful. Alexander left a substantial business behind probably inherited by his nephew William Lawson b. 1864 in Liverpool. Old photographs may possibly show the shop which may have been located on the high Street at the junction of what was once Wilsons Close, now gone.

Anyone know anything about the Falconer family who ran a cabinet maker business at some time early in the 20th century? My great grandmother married into the family around the turn of the century and had a daughter called Eva. I believe that she married a policeman who was murdered in Edinburgh, but that bit could be just a family story.

Looking for more information about the ROBERTSON family of Dalkeith. George ROBERTSON (aka ROBISON) married Ann RESTOUN - circa 1730, exact date unknown - and they had at least four children. One of these children, Mary ROBERTSON, born 2 Nov 1739, Dalkeith, went on to marry William URQUHART (again, date unknown, but circa 1769); Mary ROBERTSON and William URQUHART were my 6G Grandparents.

My interest is in Adam Armstrong and Margaret Thomson from the Dalkeith or Cockpen areas of Midlothian. They married before 1830. Adam was the son of Agnes Scott (father not mentioned on death cert), born about 1800 in Dalkeith. Margaret Thomson was the daughter of Alexander Thomson and Margaret Anderson who married in Cockpen in 1792. Adam & Margaret Armstrong had their children, Margaret, Agnes, Adam, Janet, Christina, David, Isabella, Ellen and Alexander in Newbattle but after 1851 they moved to the parish of Ballingry where James died in a mine collapse. I am researching my 4th great grandfather Andrew Dawson b. 1817 in Delkeith. He died Sept. 1871 in Delkeith. His father was Andrew Dawson married to Grace Scott in April 1813. Her parents were Ebnezer and Mary Scott. Andrew had four brothers: James b. 1818, Ebnezer b. 1819, Alexander b. 1821, and Abraham b. 1823. Andrew came to America in 1843. He married Hosette Garreau in the Dakota Territory. He had sons James and Thomas and sent them to Scotland for their education. He had a daughter Josie who was not educated. He then retired to Scotland in 1864 and died in Delkeith in 1871. I would like to correspond with anyone having any information on this family.

I am trying to locate anyone knowing or related to either Thomas Robertson born app.1920 who married Mary Falconer Thomson in 1941. Prior to her marriage Mary worked in a pharmacy in Dalkeith where she & her mother (her father went to war & ended up in Australia in Bathurst) I believe. Mary & "Tuck" had one child Tom Robertson born September 1942. Marys mother brought the son up whilst she & her husband lived in Sabah, Malaysia.(prior to this he was a motor engineer Fitter Royal Air Force,UK) They later returned to the UK where they lived before settling in Australia in the 60's. Both have passed away & I am finding it so difficult to begin a trace. I was a daughter in law & my son & I are just starting a family tree & ANY info would be greatly appreciated.
