red mail Edward Fitzpatrick
I have an ancestor Edward Fitzpatrick in London in the 1800s. He married Sarah Davey in Finsbury, Middlesex, on July 28, 1828. In 1841 they reside in a boarding house and Sarah is wrongly listed as Ann, also present are their their oldest children; whoever spoke to the census taker says Edward was from London although that doesnt carry much weight as the census taker has just dittod everybody. In 1851 Edward lives now in Spitalfields, Middlesex. He says hes a hardware hawker who was born in Spitalfields 1809. His daughter lives next door with her uncle Charles Davey. Next door on the other side is Joseph Davey and a large household. In 1861 Hes a hawker of hardware originally from Ireland, 1809, lives Bethnal Green, Middlesex with his wife Sarah Davey a silk weaver. His children John and Sarah are with him. Next door is a Sarah J Marshall shes his widowed niece through Charles Davey his brother in law. Given that he changes where hes from but keeps his age consistent how can I trace him to a home town? His children that we know about are Henry Fitzpatrick 1835 Ann Fitzpatrick 1837 Matilda Fitzpatrick 1840 Charles Fitzpatrick 18471899 John Fitzpatrick 1850 Sarah Ann Davey Fitzpatrick 18511886 The possible Edwards dont include one with a father called Henry, not a mother with any of the daughters names. Sarahs parents were John and Sarah.
Anyone out there with Stembridge ancestors from Shoreditch, the family originated in Crewkerne, Somerset and came to London in the 19th Century.
red mail COWELL, Debden, Boxted or Broxted, Essex
My convict ancestor, George COWELL, said he was from Debden but newspaper accounts have him operating as a member of a poaching gang in the Broxted area between 1835 and 1837. At the time there was also an older George Cowell, agricultural labourer, the father perhaps?) living near Boxted.. The convict was GEORGE COWELL, born about 1815, and according to his death certificate his parents were GEORGE COWELL and MARY ANN.COWELL. There was a possible marriage for a Mary to a George Cowell in Saffron Walden but I have not been able to confirm this marriage or find the birth for George Cowell. I am seeking any information about this family.

Children of this marriage were: Martha (born 1827), Frederick (1829) Harriet (1831), Sarah 1836, Hugh (1838), Urania (1840), Elizabeth (1834), George (1843), Hannah (1847) and James (1850). Hugh's second marriage was to Elizabeth COX in 1861 at St James, Shoreditch and the children of this marriage were Henry (1859), Emma (1863), Charlotte (1865) and Samuel Robert(1868). The last is my direct ancestor. He was a marine for most of his working life and then a postman. His daughter Frances Cowell nee Dick migrated to Australia in 1947. red mail HUTT, George married BURRELL, Elizabeth.
George and Eliza married 01 Jun 1852 HOXTON, she was the daughter to Thomas and George was the son to William, though it's unclear which Willliam this was, as there are more than one William it could have been. Elizabeth had grown up in Bromley. George might have grown up in Redbridge, although this is uncertain. The surname Hutt seems to have Hugenoet origins, Henry and Marie Hut had a son Louis christened on May 4th 1704 at Crispin Street, Spitalfields London- though it's not clear whether these are ancestors to George. Thankyou.

red mail Brick Lane
My father died in 1993 and I have his photo box, a number of photos have messages on the back, one being from a Cyril Moss of 252 Brick Lane. My father is in this photo with a number of lads and it has been taken at the seaside. My father was about 16 years old at the time so I can work out that it was taken mid 1930's. He and his siblings were placed in Leytonstone Childrens Home mid 20's so this could be old boys from the home, a works outing or even boys from a local club. As I cannot find 252 Brick Lane in the census records this photo is one of many that remain a mystery. Any help or suggestions would be most welcome.

red mail William John Hensher
WJH was born in 1849 son of William Hensher and Mary Hill. He married Laura Hall in 1883 but I can find no further information about them after the Census 1881. They had 5 children - William Joseph, Florence, Charles, Sidney and Ethel. Both Sidney and Ethel appeared in the 1911 Census with the occupations Lift Attendant and Belt Maker. One researcher seems to think Laura Hall (for some unknown reason) became Harriett Hensher. Harriett does appear in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 Census. Can anyone throw any more light on this family?

Joseph's father William Whyte was also a cabinet maker, while Catherine's father William Hawes was a weaver. Joseph had been born in Dublin and Catherine was born in Co. Cork. Both families were, I believe, Catholic, as their children married in Catholic churches. I presume Joseph and Catherine married in the C of E (St. Leonard's Shoreditch) because there was no Catholic church nearby.

red mail John Mullen- ex Cameronian Regiment
I am trying to find information on a John Mullen who was a Rifleman with the Cameronian Regiment in 1940. His Army number is 3244082. He might have worked in the NAAFI while he was in the Cameronian regiment, also as an electrical welder. He was also last heard of out of the army and working as a chef in the Heathrow area during the late 1960`s or 70`s. John Mullen was born in 1916 in Scotland so realistically if he is not already deceased he would be 94 years of age. He married Emily Ann Clements in London in December 1939 and they lived for a while in the Shoreditch area. By 1949 they had seperated. His father was also a John Mullen and was a coalminer in Scotland. He died at a fairly young age, between 1915 and 1939, as we know he was deceased by the time his son John married in December 1939. If anyone can help with any information at all on either John Mullen junior or senior, particularly a place of birth, please get in touch. I am asking on behalf of a close relative who is very anxious to trace him or any of his descendants. Many thanks, Linda.

red mail Frederick Smith of Whitecross Place - Furrier
Two main lines of inquiry for Fred Smith:- 1. I'd be interested in any details of Fred's furrier business - he had a factory at nos. 1-3 Whitecross Place, and lived at no. 34 in the same road (in the 1860s and 1870s). 2. Fred was born in Shoreditch (or possibly Bishopsgate) around 1839, and married Eliza Williams on 3 Jan 1859. Eliza's parents lived with them at 34 Whitecross Place. But what I'm really interested in is the emotional entanglement he had with a lady named Julia Nutt - they had an affair in 1865-1866 and Julia alleged that she then bore a son in April 1867. Fred apparently agreed that the child was his and agreed maintenance payments of £100 p.a., but abruptly stopped paying a couple of years later as he alleged that the child was not in fact his after all. Julia sued Fred for the unpaid instalments, and then Fred launched a suit in 1872 to overturn the maintenance agreement (which he won, with costs awarded against Julia). A curious fact is that one of the day's eminent silks, Sir Richard Baggallay, was employed by Fred's solicitor (Matthew Bernard Lucas) - I say this is curious because it really was a trivial case for Sir Richard to get involved with and his fees must have been monstrous! Fred's solicitor obtained affidavits from two lodging house keepers, Elizabeth Palmer and Sophia Griffiths, that apparently supported Fred's assertion that Julia had defrauded him, but the National Archives don't appear to have these (I've tracked down the bill of complaint, interrogatories and decree, but nothing else. Both parties agreed that Julia had letters from Fred regarding the affair and child, but these seem to have been lost too. Julia was the daughter of an eminent Canterbury solicitor, John Nutt, but she was very poor at the time of the case (her father had died in 1861 and she hadn't benefited much from his legacy), so she had no legal representation and was probably reduced to a state of bankruptcy by having to pay the court case costs. Using a legal "top gun" like Sir Richard in this way does seem disproportionate, so I do wonder whether Fred and his solicitor went all out to destroy Julia. Julia also disappeared after the court case, so I'd very much like to find out what happened to her as well. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

red mail Martha Wise
Hello All, My ancestor Henry Alger married a Martha Sarah Wise in Shoreditch in 1863. I've found them on the 1871 census and they appear to have died some time in the late 1870s. The IGI gives Martha's date of Christening, at St Leonard's Shoreditch, as the 8th Jan 1843 and her date of birth as the 13th Dec 1842 but I haven't been able to find a definite GRO reference. Her parents were Thomas and Martha. I have only been able to find them on the 1861 census but I believe Thomas and Martha may have originally come form the Devizes/Lavington/Trowbridge area of Wiltshire. To make matters more confusing, a Martha Ann Wise was christened at St Leonard's in the same year and her parents are given as Thomas Philpot Wise and his wife Martha, both of Kent. Any help untangling this would be much appreciated, particularly if you could locate a birth certificate for Martha or a maiden name for her mother but really anything at all would be gratefully received! Thanks.

red mail Henry Coppock and Jane Hart Wright.
I am interested in hearing from people in England who may have done the family tree of the Coppock family in London. My great-grandfather, Henry Coppock (parents Henry Coppock and Sarah Thomas), was born in London circa 1846. He married Jane Hart Wright on September 4th, 1865 at St. Leonards, Shoreditch. Their second child, Lillian Susan Coppock, was my grandmother. Also, I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has knowledge of Jane Hart Wright's family. All I know is her father's name was John, and it seems that Hart was her middle name, not part of her surname. I'd be very grateful if anyone can give me some information, particularly about Jane as I seem to have hit a brick wall in my research.

red mail Rice Family (2)
Thanks to all who gave me help with my first query regarding Samuel Rice. I now have the requested info about him, his wife Sarah Dell and children. Now I am trying to make sure that the Samuel Rice I have found listed is the correct one. Looking on IGI and various Ancestry trees I find Samuel Rice b. 1788 which makes him 12 years older than Sarah. This just makes me wonder if I have the correct Samuel Rice. Presumably the only way of checking is to locate the Parish Recordss for St Leonards, Shoreditch which appear to be in the Metropolitan Archives. Being in Scotland this is a long way to go if it may not be of any help to me. Can anyone help/give advise on this please? Would the Parish Records give me more information? Is there anothr way of checking this out? Thank you for reading my query.

Edward Thornton Tubbs (or possibly Thornton-Tubbs) was born in Shoreditch in 1850. His father was Richard Tubbs, but that is as far back as I've been able to go so far. He married Lavinia Darling at Newington in 1875. Lavinia had previously been married to Frederick Banfield at Shoreditch in 1867 and had two children by him, who were apparently adopted by Edward. In 1877 Edward and his family emigrated to Australia. This is where I come in as Edward's daughter, Lily, who was born prior to their emigration, was my paternal grandmother. I'd appreciate any help I can get in extending this bit of my family tree please.

red mail Bridget White Shoreditch
Is there anyone one with info on Bridget White d of Thomas? William North married Bridget White 1876 in Bethnal Green. Her father is down as Thomas labourer and it does not mention deceased. They had 4 children all born in Shoreditch (2 before their marriage!) William 1871, Joseph 1873, Thomas 1877 and Henry 1879. The 1871 census has them at the same address, 5 Perrott Court, Shoreditch. A Sarah White widow from Ireland is down as living at no6. Did Bridget also live at no6 so could this be her mother? Bridget is a quite often and Irish name or is it mere coincidence? The following children are down as Sarah's. Margaret age 14, Alice age 10, Thomas age 8 and Patsy aged 5. All born Shoreditch as was Bridget. Two birth certificates that match two of the births have Thomas labourer as the father but Ellen nee Murray as the mother. Could Ellen and Sarah be one and the same? Murray, like Bridget, is , has strong Irish connections. Is there anyone out there who has a connection and therefore a solution to these coincedenses?
