red mail Smith/Wright family
My great grandfather, Joseph Ambrose Smith was born in Poplar, London in c1847, according to his marriage certificate. He gave his father's name as John Smith, Merchant and his mother's maiden name as Mary Wright. Joseph married my great grandmother, Mary Brown, in 1895 when he was 48 and she was 25. He gave his address as South Melbourne and his occupation as 'Iron Worker'. I have not been able to ascertain to date when he left England, whether it was as a child with his family or later in life. According to Mary Brown's second marriage certificate, Joseph Ambrose Smith died in 1897 and his occupation then was 'miner'. They had a child, Alexander William Smith, in 1893, so before they were married. I have plenty of information for Alexander, my grandfather, so it is his family I am seeking information for. Have had fantastic feedback from Curiousfox members when researching my maternal grandmother, so am hopeful of the same here. Thank you. Jane.

red mail George DORMAN né HANSFORD
When I saw this signature on a letter I thought 'How strange for a bloke to put that'. The letter was to his cousin, my grandmother. It seems that George was born a Hansford but his mother remarried and he adopted his step-father's name (not that I think he was given a choice). Subsequently George married Clara Marriott while on active service in Gibralter in 1890. They had four daughters: Winifred 1892 Gibralter (married Thomas Burke 1915 West Bromwich), Gertrude 1893 Bradford married William Rogers 1914 West Bromwich, Matilda 1895 Pottingham married Frederick Dunkey 1921 West Bromwich and Ivy 1899 Pottingham married William Shaw 1926 West Bromwich. Thomas Burke and William Rogers were both wounded in WW1 and George was a CSM at his local Midlands depot until the cessation of hostilities. How many new cousins will get in touch with me because of this posting?
