Hi. Looking for any information on my ancestors. Samuel Preston was born in Kensington in 1803. His wife was Harriet (don't know her maiden surname). They had a son Samuel born in Kensington in 1826. Somewhere between 1826 and 1833 they settled in South Africa. Samuel Snr passed away in 1841 and Samuel Jnr in 1875. It seems Samuel Snr parents were Lydia (born about 1760 and died 1820. Found her DN in St Mary Abbot Church records) and father was William Preston. I can find no further information on William (birth, dead, marriage) and Lydia(maiden surname) . Any advice how to go about it? As well as Harriet's information. Any info would be greatly appreciated. regards Angie

Barkers of Kensington
As a boy in the 1950's my father took me to Barkers emporium to show me a plaque with the names of employees who had fought in the South African wars. My great grandfather, Thomas Cook named on the plaque. The shop is now under new ownership and no one appears to know what happened to the plaque. Was it my imagination? or does any one else recall it and possibly know what happened to it. Many thanks Ken
red mail 12 Exmoor Street, Kensington
Can anyone tell me what was at 12 Exmoor Street in 1925? Was it a hospital or workhouse infirmary?
My brick wall, Gertrude MURRAY married John DOSSETT in Hammersmith 1892. I was unable to determine Gertrudes life details prior to the marriage with any comfortable certainty. At that point I reached out for help and it was suggested that Gertrude MURRAY was probably the 5 year old foundling from Notting Hill on charity at Nazareth House in Hammersmith on the 1871 census. After Johns death in Jan 1911, the children were put in an orphanage. I finally found Gertrude by matching her signature on census with her signature on their marriage doc. She had resumed her maiden name? & moved to Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. Some of her details on the 1911 census are correct, some incorrect, others I am not sure. The 1911 census shows her living with Jane & Sarah Jane MARSHALL. According to this census, the MARSHALLs are sisters, spinsters, retired teachers & also Gertrude's AUNTS. If Gertrude is related to the MARSHALL sisters, that is a new clue. A search revealed a GERTRUDE HUGHES MARSHALL born 1st quarter 1867 Kensington, but no marriage, death or census record found for her. A search shows a few ___ HUGHES MARSHALLs. Could Gertrude MURRAY truly be GERTRUDE HUGHES MARSHALL? Would a scared 5 year old foundling know her own name? Did anyone know her name? Was she simply "found" in Notting Hill? Who is my great-grandmother? All theories entertained!

My mum Karen and my dad Robert both worked at the Lexham hotel in Lexham Gardens in about 1980-1982. They used to socialise in the Atlas Apollo Hotel next door and also an Irish Club.
