Alfred married Polly Keen in 1911 at Bethnal Green, and they had the following children: Lily, Alfred, Harry J., John T., James Frederick, Albert Thomas, Charles E., and Doris. Polly's parents were Sabina and Samuel Edward Keen, an oil cloth salesman. Alfred, like his father, Henry, was a mattress maker. STIFF family
trying to find more about the STIFF family. Grace DOUGLASS b. 25th Jan 1842 in 14 Sidney Street, Bethnal Green Occupation 1871 Machinist married Henry Stiff 11 December 1864 in Botoloph, Bishopsgate London born 1841 in Bethnal Green. Henry Stiff does not appear on any of the censuses. Where was he? On the 1881 census his two oldest daughters are in a children's home at Barking, Essex, Emma Eliza Stiff and Harriett Stiff. Their older brother Henry William Stiff born 1865 in Shoreditch is, on the 1881 census in the navy Boy 2nd class. They also had a sister Rebecca Stiff b. 1873 Bethnal Green Cannot trace them or their mother Grace on any further censuses. There were two other brothers who I can trace on the censuses. Walter Stiff B 1 st Oct 1875 in 5 Reeves Terrace, Canal Road, Mile End and his brother Frank also known as Frances can be traced, although interestingly on both their marriage certificates they give their father as being Walter Stiff deceased. On the 1891 census they are both at the Mile End Old Town School, Bancroft Road. Would welcome any information on this STIFF family.

Charles Douglas(s0 was married 14 May 1833 in St. Matthew, Bethnal Green to Mary Ann MACE born 24th October 1809 in Rose Lane, Spitalfields. They had a number of children. I am trying to find out where Charles Douglass was baptised and who his parents were. Any information gratefully received.

Joseph was born about 1831 in Bethnal Green and married Frances Hitchen in 1850 in Bethnal, on the 1901 census his daughter Emma states that she was born in Hungary in 1869, as I have not been able to find them on the census from 1851 to 1891 this may be true, if so I would love to know how they came to be in Hungary. Emma first married James Osborne in Bethnal then William Shinner in Richmond and moved to West ham circa 1903 and there begins another mystery. I would be grateful for any help at all so thanks in anticipation

Seem to have hit a brick wall with my g grandfather his marriage certificate states he is Samuel Horner born around 1853 Middlesex, married Susannah Vizer in 1882 at St Thomas Church Bethnal Green. His father was also Samuel and father and son have occupation listed as hawkers. I am able to trace my g grandfather in the census records from 1881 onwards, but can not find him in any census records prior to that date, and I can not find his birth records. Likewise gg grandfather is proving to be as elusive, I think I have found him in the 1881 census which states he is widowed, living at Great Pearl Street Spitalfields. I also think he may have been born around 1822 in Limehouse and died 1902 Mile End Old Town Infirmary. Can anyone help or offer any suggestions as to where I can gain some more information.

I am looking for a John Boulter ( b. abt 1801 in Bethnal Greeen) He was married to Rebecca Grafton. They had a son Mason and a son James, amongst a number of other children. I am seeking information on my great-great grandmother, Sarah Rymer (Rimer?) Cooper, born in Southwark circa 1790. She married Charles Cross at St George the Martyr, Borough on 17 August 1807 and in 1834 she was insured to run the pub the Van Tromp on Bethnal Green Road. In the censuses of 1841 and 1851 she was a licensed victualler in Bethnal Green, but in 1861 she was retired and living with her youngest daughter (Emily) in Islington. A death certificate was issued in 1869 for a Sarah Cooper, living in Holborn. I am seeking information on her parents.

I am seeking information about my great-great-great-great grandfather John Teta. His 1839 will states that he is a weaver at 70 Church Street Bethnal Green. He married Elizabeth Pottier in 1785. They had at least three daughters, Elizabeth (1791), Esther (1793-1872) and Harriott (sic" (1799) all christened at St Matthew's Bethnal Green. Between 1835 and 1839 John Teta and his grandson, Matthew John Lill, were the licensees of the White Hart, Bethnal Green Road. John Teta died in 1839. In the will John mentions his nephew James Potter or Pottier.

In 1805 he was apprenticed to George Cadogan, an Oil and Colourist. In 1813 he married Elizabeth Teta in Hackney and they had at least four children, my great-great grandfather, Matthew John Lill (1815-1892), Henry James (1816), James (1818-1824) and Harriett E (1826-1873). In 1833 James is a butcher at 155 Church Road, Bethnal Green. He died in BG in 1838.

George died in Bethnal Green around 1862.

I am seeking information on Charles Cross, who I believe is my great-great-great grandfather, born in or around Tottenham circa 1790. He married Sarah Rymer (Rimer?) Cooper (b 1790) at St George the Martyr, Southwark, on 17 August 1807 and they lived in Bethnal Green. Between 1827 and 1829 a Charles Cross was the licensee of the Van Tromp Pub in Church Street Bethnal Green. In 1834 Sarah Rymer Cooper Cross was the licensee. A death certificate issued in 1838 for a Charles Cross of Bethnal Green lists him as being a resident of the lunatic asylum. Charles and Sarah had several children, Henry George (1814), my g-g grandmother, Sarah Rymer (1817), Edward (1817), Esther (1825), Mary (1826), Alfred (1830) and Emily Ann (1832).

I'm trying to find more information about Maud Ward who was born in Bethnal Green in 1888 to Henry Ward and Rosina. Apparently she didn't marry but had at least one son - Jack - in 1917. She also ran a shop in Belsize Road, North London named Jacksons which sold clothes, shoes, and associated wares. She died in September 1830 and is buried in Hampstead Cemetery. If anybody has any information about Maud, no matter how small, I would be very grateful to hear from you.

Has anyone any info on music hall acts in london in late victorian early edwardian days.I ask because my gt grandma alice slade born in the eastend in 1871 used to tell my mum that in her youth she was part of a acrobatic balancing act and that she worked with and was friendly with Marie Lloyd.She used to say that as she was quite small only about 4ft 10 she used to be at the top of the balancing pyramid in the stage act.

I've found marriage certificates for 3 of the daughters of Harris Cohen of 36 Linden Buildings, Brick Lane, but can't find one for Rachel. Rachel and her husband emigrated to France. Annie Cohen married Morris Rodgun, a cabinet maker, in 1908. His father was Abraham Mordecai Rodgun, a merchant. Simmie Cohen married Sam Kupinsky, a cabinet maker, at Mile End in 1912. They emigrated to the US. His father was Lazarus Kupinsky, a Hebrew teacher. Alice Cohen married Marks Gis, a cabinet maker, at Whitechapel in 1919. His father was Jacob Gis (deceased). He had been a bootmaker. Does anyone have any information on this family? Thank you.

Tracing family history. Grandfather Albert Webb born 14/5/1894 or 1890 born to Joseph A. Webb and Caroline Webb, Shoreditch. On 1890 census listed as 5 months old. Not listed with parents in 1901 census, parents living at Beck Street Bethnal Green. Relatives told me that he was kicked out of home/or run away as he as caught smoking. Father was a messenger for the LCC, so morales were everything. I have been kindly told by fellow CuriousFox members that he could of been on a training ship, the Exmouth or the Shaftsbury. How can I access this information from the London Archives to check this out. Or to see if he was in any other institution or workhouse. I have a big gap from 5 months until he was married in 1934. Looking for Charles Peter Abbott b: c1824 Bethnal Green. Emigrated to Australia, where he married Martha Tyrrel Parrott in 1853. Returned to Bethnal Green sometime after 1866 and died there in 1883. Burial place is unknown. In the 1881 Census, Charles was living at 85 Warner Place, with two of his sons - Charles Henry and William Henry. I am looking for information regarding the Reynolds' of Bethnal Green/Spitalfields. My g.g grandfather was William Reynolds born abt 1828 in Bethnal Green. He had, amongst others, Henry and Albert Reynolds who both appear to be the same age. I can't find them on the BMD and can't find them in the 1871 census. Does anyone have any info on the Reynolds family that rings a bell. I think William married a Margaret and I know his profession was a bootmaker.

Hi i dont know if anyone can help me, but im trying to research my grandmothers family. Her grandmother was Lizzie Cook nee. Faircloth and was born in Bethnal Green c. 1886,her father was Henry Faircloth and her mother was Caroline Housden. Her mother remarried a man named Thomas J Flanagan and i believe they had a son David Flanagan c.1894, After the suspected death of his parents David was sent to Canada. She had two sons Thomas and Frederick and two Daughters Doris Edith and Amelia. Doris married John (Jerry) Louis Kemp and Amelia (Milly) married Charles (Sandy) Simmonds Thomas married Kathleen (Kit) Kettle and Fred married Lilian. My Grandfather, ERNEST ALBERT COLLINS, Cabinet Maker, was born in 1887 in Bethnal Green. My mother has told me (and he also mentioned it when he was alive)that he played football for either Tottenham Hotspurs or Arsenal, but having contacted both clubs, I can find no evidence of this. Is there anybody who can shed some light on this please?
