red mail Alexander McDowell - (Achill - County Mayo)
Born around 1777, Alexander met & married Ann McIntyre. He was not from Achill originally, but was working for the army and the unit he was with ran out of food etc.. At low tide he and others were sent over the water to the cottages that could be seen on Achill. Anns was one of the first they tried and she allowed them in on condition they leave their weapons outside. After drying out, being fed and watered, she sent them on their way with some provisions. Later on, Alexander secretly made his way back to Ann who hid him in her cottage and they eventually settled down together. Belcarra, CAFFERKY family, Co.Mayo - (Ballycarra, Belcarra - County Mayo)
I am having difficulty tracing the place where my G.Grandfather, Michael John CAFFERKY, born about 1872 was born and any family. He had a very long term relationship with a Hannah Lomas in Manchester, Lancs, resulting in at least 9 children. My great Aunt, Winifred Mary Cafferky born in 1914 remembered holidays spent in Co.Mayo and I thought she said Blencara but I now think this may have been Belcarra. She told me of her Aunt Ellen in Ireland. Sadly she died in 2002 in Manchester. Her siblings were Catherine Cafferky, born 1912, my grandmother; Michael Patrick, born 1917; John born 1919; Patrick Joseph born 1921; Anne born 1924; James born 1924. I do not know when he came to Manchester and the first sign of him is in 1912 on my grandmothers birth certificate. He died in 1925 and it is thought one reason he did not marry my G.grandmother was that he was already married in Ireland. I am not sure where to go from here. If anyone knows anything about the Cafferky's or can suggest anything I would be truly grateful.

red mail An Orphan in Westport - (Ballycroy - County Mayo)
Mary Dean born 14 Nov 1860 Ballycroy, County Mayo, Ireland, remembered as a child of 3 or 4 walking with her mother who carried an infant child to Westport. They stayed the night at the home of the local cobbler. The next morning her mother and the infant were gone, we understand to take passage to America to follow the father of one or both of the children. Mary was raised and schooled in the local Catholic orphanage and at 12 she began working for the local postmistress until she went to Scotland in her late teens. When she married she wrote to Martin Conway, town register, for her birth certificate. He could only write back that her father was John Dean, tavern keeper, and her mother was Mary Murphy. John went to America and Mary followed a few months later. Names may be flopped and be John Murphy and Mary Dean. Would love to confirm her parents and finish the details of her life. It is a difficult puzzle to solve. Mary was my great-grandmother.
red mail Fenn/Finn Family - (Ballyglass - County Mayo)
I'm researching the family history of Nicholas Fenn/Finn, who was born in Ballyglass, county Mayo, in 1829, and emigrated to Massachusetts in the United States around 1849. From his marriage certificate, I've learned that his father was Edward Fenn/Finn and his mother was Bridget (maiden name unknown). The surname is spelled differently on almost all of the documents I've acquired, which complicates things somewhat, because I'm not sure which is the correct version. Nicholas died on the battlefield during the Civil War and I've hit a brick wall in terms of learning more about his relatives in Ireland. If anyone could provide clues or leads about the Fenn/Finn family in county Mayo, I'd be truly grateful.

Gallagher and McNicholas families in Carrownteeaun, between Bohola and Kiltimagh, as well as in Comderrynabinnia, both in Killedan Parish in County Mayo - (Bohola, Both Chomhla, and Parish - County Mayo)
My great-grandfather, Peter Gallagher, was born circa 1846 in the townland of Carrownteeaun, between Bohola and Kiltimagh, although his family had originally come from Comderrynabinnia in the same parish. He married Bridget King from Claremorris, County Mayo (Parish of Kilcolman). Peter had two brothers, James and Michael (Mick), and all three raised their families in Carrownteeaun (they may have had sisters as well, but the available records are uncertain). The father of the three brothers was Thomas Gallagher, as revealed in the civil marriage record for James. Thomas may have had an older (?) brother named Tim, who was the tenant in Carrownteeaun in 1856, as shown in Griffith's Valuation. A Martin Gallagher, listed in the 1834 Tithe Applotment Book in the neighboring townland, may have been the father of Thomas and Tim. Mick and his wife, Honora Larkin. took their children to Missouri in the US in the late 1870's. All but two of Peter's children moved to New York, and I have detailed records of those two branches of the family. Interested in learning more about the James Gallagher branch in Ireland, and any earlier history than what I have already. James Gallagher married Catherine McNicholas in 1866, and they remained in the parish (shown in the 1901 census), but at least one of their children moved to the UK. Catherine was from the townland of Altbane, and her father was John McNicholas, as revelaed in her civil marriage record. James, Mick, and Peter each either married into or had descendants who married into the McNicholas family from the same area, and some also married into the Loftus and Larkin families. Any info about the three brothers, other siblings they may have had, or earlier family history would be appreciated, and I can share info about the US descendants (and some in Ireland).
McNulty, McDonnell, and McAndrew families in Callow Lakes area, Parish of Killasser, County Mayo - (Callow - County Mayo)
My grandmother, Anne Marie McNulty, was born 10 Oct 1885 in Corthoonduff, in Callow, Parish of Killaser, County Mayo. Her parents were Thomas McNulty (born circa 1840 in the same parish) and Bridget McDonnell (born circa 1846, probably in Corthoonduff). Thomas and Brdget were maried in Killasser parish 5 March1869. I have a lot of info about Anne Marie McNulty, and her siblings who came to the US and their descendants (includding all the info in the online parish registers in Ireland), but not much info further back, except that Thomas McNulty's parents were apparently James McNulty and Bridget McAndrew, and Bridget's parents were apparently Patrick McDonnell and Bridget McDonnell. They were all from Callow or surrounding townlands. Interested in learning more about the families, and can share info about the descendants of Thomas McNulty and Bridget McDonnell in the US, if desired.

red mail Crossmolina, Laherdane, Achill - (Crossmolina, Crois Mhaoiliona, and Parish - County Mayo)
My great great grandparents, John and Margaret Sharkey were from County Mayo. John Sharkey is believed to have been from the Crossmolina/Laherdane area in Addergoole parish but recent research by an Irish genealogist has him born in Galway city to Michael (Miles) Sharkey and Bridget Leonard. His wife, Margaret, who was also called Sharkey before marriage is believed to have come from Achill parish although British census info. gives her birthplace as Castlebar. John was born in 1830 and his father was called Miles Sharkey, a stonemason. He had a brother Peter Sharkey born around 1834 and believed to have come to England and then emigrated to America. Margaret was born around 1834 and her father was Francis Sharkey and family legend suggests that as he was a journeyman stonemason he may have settled eventually in Co.Roscommon. Recent research shows his wife to have been Celia Walsh who was born in Mayo. Francis died somewhere between 1845 and 1851 as Celia appears on the 1881 British Census as a widow living in Manchester with her children. John and Margaret were married in 1855 in St. Peter in Chains RC Church in Stoke on Trent, England and one of the witnesses was Pheoby Sharkey sister of Margaret. They moved around 1880 to the North East of England living in Darlington, Stockton on Tees and eventually settling in Spennymoor. Their children were: Jane Ellen b.1856, Mary Ann b.1858(my great grandmother), Margaret Pheobe b.1860, Miles b.1862 (all born in Hanley, Stoke on Trent)Edward Joseph b.1868 Darlington, Elizabeth b.1871 Spennymoor and Richard b.1874 Stockton. red mail Finn family knock - (Knock, Cnoc Mhuire, and Parish - County Mayo)
I recently visited Ballyhaunis and spoke with Tom Finn (at the shoe shop) about possible relatives. I showed him a photo of my father and uncles and he thought that they looked like the Finn family in Knock. The earliest relative I have in the Finn side is Patrick Finn b.1861 in Mayo. He married Margaret Mullen (b1868) in 1895. We were led to believe that my Grandfather (Lawrence Vincent Finn b.1921 Manchester UK) and his brothers, regularly visited relatives in Ballyhaunis prior to the second world war. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who thinks that they might know the connection that we had to Mayo.
