Ashworth - (Windy Bank - Lancashire)
Richard Ashworth was the owner of Windy Bank around 1800. He married the sister of Jonathan Hitchin, also of Windy Bank, and they had a daughter Anne who was born in 1806. Anne married Robert Lee, farmer, of Martholme, Great Harwood. Robert, who was born in 1804, was the son of Jonathan Lee of Hapton Hall. Anne and Robert are in the 1841 and 1851 census returns for Great Harwood, but not in 1861.
red mail Snape of Wingates - (Wingates - Lancashire)
One branch of my maternal ancestry is the Snape Family of Wimberry Hill, Wingates. Robert Snape bap 1790 was a weaver and was married to Betty (Green?) and they had children Margaret (marr Robert Massey), Alice (marr William Southern), Betty, Ellen ( never married but had children) Mary (marr James Hart) Rachel, Betty, James died young and James (marr Ellen Hurst) It would appear the Snape family moved around the area, as there are various Settlement orders at Preston RO. Ellen Snape above is my 3 x great grandmother - when her son Frederick married in 1877 to Ann Pilkington, he gave his father's name as Peter Elliott. Peter and his elder brother William lived and worked for farmer John Hartley at Barnabas Farm, Chorley Road. I believe that Peter bc 1826 and a man the same age, called Manual Hartley left Liverpool on a ship bound for Philadelphia in 1864. Manual is most likely Emanuel Hartley of Wingates. However Peter must have returned at some point as he is buried in St John's Wingates with his brothers William and John Elliott of Lostock Hall. Peter is described as a retired Master Greengrocer on his death certificate. Does anyone know anything else about this family?
