red mail CLIFF family of Heapey/Brindle/Chorley - (Heapey - Lancashire)
Hi there. I'm trying to find when and where James Cliff was born. He married Ann Cocker in Brindle, Lancashire in 1761. Ann was from Brindle, but I cannot trace John in Brindle, so I suspect he moved into the area before marrying Ann. The problem is, where from ? According to IGI, the several most likely possibles are the James's listed in St Peter's, Huddersfield and Woodborough, Nottingham. My question is, does anybody have a James Cliff travelling from somewhere in the UK before 1761 before marrying Ann Cocker ? Has anybody got a young James Cliff in the early 1700's and can't find where he went ? I hope we can fit two pieces together here. Thanks for reading. Steve

red mail James Pickthall, Gamekeeper, and Catherine Parkin - (Holker - Lancashire)
My gg-grandfather James Pickthall (1830-1902) worked as gamekeeper for a Mr Cavendish, brother to the Duke of Devonshire. James was a younger son from a large farming family, and had been born at Old Park, in the parish of Dalton in Furness, Lancashire. I don't know where he met Catherine Parkin, who was from Wigton, Cumberland and worked as a domestic servant, but perhaps they were both employed at Holker Hall. When they married in 1862, Catherine was pregnant and had an older child. Two of their children were born in the area: one at Cark in Cartmel in 1864, the other at Holker in Cartmel in 1866. Their next (known) child was born in 1870 on the Isle of Walney, where James's family lived, so they may not have been at Holker at the time of the great fire in 1871. I would love to confirm James and Catherine's employment, and what years they lived in the Holker area.

Hollins Green, Lancashire - (Hollins Green - Lancashire)
The Chantry Chapel of Hollinfare was established by Hamlet Mascy in 1497 or 1498 so that prayers and masses would be offered for his soul. No doubt it was established in Hollins Green to meet the needs of the growing sett1ement there. The Massey family, Lords of the Manor and scions of the great Cheshire family will already have had a chapel their manor house at Rixton Old Hall. After the suppression of chantries, Hollinfare Chapel became a chapel of ease to Warrington Parish Church - - 7 milesaway, and it is probably at this time that it became known as St Helens. There seems to have been an interrupted ministry and it is on1y in the 18th century that this became continuous. The Church was extensively remodelled in 1734. At this time a school appears to have been provided by the minister. The first schoo1ing was provided by John Collier- the father of the Lancashire poet Tim Bobbin. Continuity of worship seems to have been provided by recruiting newly qualified ministers from Cambridge University. In the 1800Õs Hollins Green grew with the cotton industry, and with the draining of the mosslands to provide farmland and, with the railway so did Glazebrook. The chapel took on a growing role under 2 long serving Ministers- Peter Ste...
