My father - Ellis Shuttleworth, was born in 1935 at Nell Lane, Withington, Manchester. His parents Ellis Shuttleworth and Doris Smith, married just days before his birth. I have a copy of the marriage certificate. In July 1937, his parents were jailed for cruelty, for 4 months. I am unsure, at this stage, where he was placed following this event. My father was raised by a Smith family (Harriet and Mark) at Neston Avenue in Withington. His childhood was not overly happy. He was always known as Ellis Smith and only discovered his true name when required to produce a birth certificate for his first job, at the age of 15. At the age of 19, he changed his name by Deed Poll to Ellis David Smith, cut all ties with the UK, boarded a ship to New Zealand and has lived in NZ ever since. Any information regarding Dad's history - particularly his placement following the cruelty jailing, would be most welcome
red mail 20, Nell Lane, Withington.
I'm looking to find information regarding the history of 20, Nell Lane, Withington from 1900 to around 1940. My Grandfather, Cecil Shaw, was born there in August 1907. His Mother is shown as 'Mary Elizabeth Shaw, Domestic Servant of Chorlton cum Hardy' In 1938 my GG/M Louisa Blundell, died there although she lived at 15, Newton St, Chorlton on Medlock. Was it a Nursing Home or a Hostel of some sort? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. This side of my family is very fragmented and is proving very difficult to trace.
red mail Lilian and Terence Knowles
Lilian and Terence Knowles born about 1937/40 Mother Kitty Knowles They lived in Queen Street Withington Manchester for a short time and then returned to the Swinton area. My mother was a friend of Mrs Knowles. She used to sew a lot. Her husband a sailor during the war was declared missing but she always held the hope that he would be found alive. Would love to hear from either Lilian or Terence.
red mail JESSOP/JESSUP Charles Vincent

He was born on New Years Day, 1880 in Fosdyke, Lincs. and his wife Edith SNAPE was born in Middlesborough in 1883. They had two girls, Edith Kate born 1907 in Withington and Marjorie Alice born 1911 in Heaton Moor, Lancs. In 1911 they were living in St. Georges Rd., Withington.
red mail Bethell
Searching for any descendants of Samuel Bethell, my grandfather, who was born 1870 Levenshulme and spent most of his life around Withington and Ladybarn. Several occupations but primarily a gardener. He died 1952 in East Didsbury. Had two families. First with Elizabeth Rees also known as Sarah Elizabeth Rees, born Wales circa 1868, died 1906. Together they had around nine children. Samuel's father John and his grandfather also called Samuel used to live off Burnage Lane behind St Margarets Church in what I believe was a cottage on the Bibby farm. Any info most welcome. Many thanks. Second family with Jane Eleanor Jones, born circa 1868. Married Samuel 1906, died 1931. Together they had four children.
red mail Norbury
Any information or pictures sought on the ORION INN on Burton Road, Withington, a public house that is still standing today. The inn is still standing today, and my 2x Gt grandfather John Norbury was landlord there in the 1870s/1880s along with his father George Norbury. John was apparently also the parish clerk, and served in the navy on the HMS Orion, which is presumably how the inn first got its name. Would be interested in contact with anyone with a connection to the pub past and present, and especially of any old photos of the Orion Inn around the turn of the century (1900) or earlier. Would also like to talk to anyone who has a Norbury connection in Withington during this period as John and his wife Martha had a number of children.
