red mail John Ashurst born c1866 in Wigan area
I am very interested to contact anyone who can help with identifying John Ashurst and ancestors, born in the Wigan area in or very close to 1866. His father is believed to have been William Ashurst, but this is not confirmed. There are several entries in the Wigan census documents and we have no way of knowing who is who. This John was married and widowed, probably in the Wigan area and probably had a son called John, DoB being unknown. John 1866 moved to Worksop Notts, working as a colliery engine driver. We think his son John may have later followed him to the colliery and died in 1950 there. John 1866 remarried in Worksop to a 12 years younger Annie Ferrand and had 6 children. Annie died aged 36 in 1914 and for some reason John did not maintain the children and they were taken into care and separated. We cannot find a death registration for John 1866, and there is a rumour that he signed up for WW1, though he would have been somewhat old for becoming a soldier. A John Edwin Ashurst of unknown age is recorded as being KIA in WW1. If you can tie any of this information to your personal tree, or if you would be able to help do some research locally to help out a Canadian resident, please contact me. Thank you
