red mail Liverpool, Toxteth, 120 Hill Street: who lived there in 1873?
Hello, I'm trying to discover who was living at 120 Hill Street, near Liverpool's Coburg and Brunswick Docks, when my Great Uncle Edwin CLAYTON was born there in November 1873. I've just received a copy of Edwin's birth certificate which records his birth on 16 November 1873 at 120 Hill Street, in the West Derby and Toxteth registration district of Liverpool. Edwin's parents, William CLAYTON and Caroline (nee PIGGOTT), usually resided in the East End of London, and I don't believe 120 Hill Street was their permanent residence. For various complicated reasons (another story!) they had travelled to Liverpool for the birth of their son Edwin. I have found on the 1871 census that 120 Hill Street was the residence of George WAKEFORD, his wife Georgina (nee WELLSTED) and their family. George was a Marine Store Dealer, and there's evidence that it was his own business. George WAKEFORD's wife Georgina had died in Q3 1871 and George married his second wife, Elizabeth, on 4th Sept 1872. George's address at that time was still Hill Street, and his occupation was still Marine Store Dealer. If you are researching any of these familes, or have access to a Liverpool Trade Directory of 1873 and could look up the address for me, I would be hugely grateful if you could contact me. I'm trying to establish whether there was any special connection between the CLAYTONs and Wakefords. As George had been a merchant seaman earlier in his life, and William Clayton was also a merchant seaman, I am wondering whether they were old shipmates. Another possibility is that as the WAKEFORDS, PIGGOTTS and WELLSTEDS had originated from Sussex and Hampshire, they may have been related. For background info, Hill Street runs almost due west from Coburg and Brunswick Docks, and according to an 1880s map of the area it was quite densely built-up with terraced houses and pubs, as well as the Royal Southern Hospital on the north side. Many thanks for reading this.
red mail Everstead family
Looking for any information on the Everstead family who settled in Toxteth/Dingle area of Liverpool having moved from Germany/Prussia sometime between 1850 and 1890. A Johan Everstead, born around 1829, moved there with a son (Frederick, born 1843) who later married Annie Wilson (formerly Ann Bryden). There may have been a younger brother called Johan Everstead, born around 1863. Johan married Elizabeth Roberts (born around 1865) in 1891. Johan (senior) was a mariner and it is likely that he changed his name to Everstead or Everstaide from a German equivalent when they settled
John Joseph Dignam
John Joseph Dignam b. 1865 abt Liverpool. Married Mary Peacock (b. 1868 abt) in Liverpool on April 5, 1885. Two (2) children: John Roderick Dignam b. 1885, and Emma Dignam b. 1867 (GRO reference "Dignnan"). John Joseph Dignam was a butcher. His father was Roderick Dignam b. 1820/ d. 1884. Roderick Dignam was probably born in Ireland. Seeking GRO data, sibling data, mother's name/data, and any other information. Edit: Thanks to some very help CuriousFox folks I can add more data: 1939 Register lists a date of birth of June 12, 1865. Mary Dignam (nee Peacock) died 1895 abt. John Joseph Dignam was remarried to Caroline Augusta Lace in 1898. Roderick Dignam was either born in 1920 or 1938. One set of records lists death age as 46 another states 64. One or the other was transposed -- or the third option is the birth data was 1928 as per other available LDS data (a penmanship issue?).

red mail Dynan/Dinan/Dinnin/Dinen etc who were Tailors in Lancashire.
Hi, I'm looking for help with Dynan/Dinan's in Liverpool and possibly Manchester in the early to mid 1800's. The oldest known relation is John Dynan/Dinan born abt 1806-12 in Ireland, possibly Co Cork, he was a Tailor by occupation. He's on the 1841 census with his family but then left his family in Liverpool and emigrated to the US arriving safely in late 1850 in New York, it appears he quickly died there according to his wife's 1851 Liverpool Census where she is listed as 'widow'. We cannot find anything other than his marriage in 1827 at the Cathedral Manchester to Ann Parry ( no parents listed), the 1841 English census and then his arrival in New York, we cannot find his parents or his death registered anywhere and it's very frustrating! He/they had four children that we know of, but maybe even eight or more between 1827-1845, John, Charles, Griffith and Ann. I know the lines down from these children, except for John born abt 1829-31 in Anglesey, Wales who is on the 1851 census living with his maternal Grandparents. (I'm trying not to get side tracked..but John 'junior' may also go to the US later and die in the Battle of Bull Run/Manassas in 1861, or he could be the person in the family tale who 'fell' overboard off a ship and drowned, maybe trying to save a colleagues life...another puzzle.) I'm now pinning my hopes on the fact John 'senior' is listed as a Tailor on any documentation we have seen. Curiously in Lancashire at that time there appears to be a few Dynan/Dinan/Dinnin/Dineen men who were all Tailors, so I'm hoping there is some link, they maybe related ie. if his brothers then trained in the family business in Ireland, if his sons then trained pre 1841 census and out working elsewhere etc! Does anyone know anything about these other men who were tailors: William Dynan who married Mary Dansall in 1835, Edward Dinnin who married Margaret Holburn in Rochdale in 1851 and his father also called Edward was a tailor too, Nicholas Dynan who married Mary Simmons/Sommers in 1851 in Bolton and his father was John Dynan also a tailor and maybe our John or not, and Robert Dinnen who was a tailor and also the father of Robert John Dinnen (a tailor)who married Mary Ann Piper in 1885 in Salford) incase a family link starts to appear? Also in Liverpool about the same time were two sisters, Mary Dynan marrying James Walsh in 1834 and Bridget Dynan marrying John Lyons (a Tailor!) in's possible these two could be relations also. Does anyone know anything at all that could help me break through this wall? My parents tried for years pre the Internet using old records and churchyard visits etc and I've been trying for at least 20 yrs now! Any help or guidance of any sort would be fantastic, Thank you. Lynn

His parents were James FUREY and Elizabeth SHAW and his siblings who survived into adulthood were Mary, Elizabeth, Andrew and James. It would seem he was always referred to as Joe and he was in the army where he served in Egypt prior to WW2. Up till then he was still single, though he may have married from about 1940 onwards. He definitely survived the war. However, after this time all trace from may side of the family seems to have been lost and I don't even know whether he stayed in the Liverpool area. I know there was little, if any, contact with his brother Andrew (my grandfather) and his sister Mary, and brother James have long since died leaving no children. However, he may have retained some contact with his sister Elizabeth who married a Richard BROWN. They and their children moved to the Huyton area of Liverpool in the late 1940s or early 1950s.
