My Great Grandfather Peter, a Wine and Spirits merchant in Leigh is said to have been a man of some importance yet I know almost nothing about him. I do know that he went into business with Richard Green and they ran a business together including a bottling plant but I can find nothing of detail on the web and I live in Glasgow, a long way from Leigh. Ellen Barton of Welch Hill was a child buried in unmarked family grave 13k64 in Leigh cemetery with members of my family, William Johnson, Aspinall, Kniveton etc. The name Ellen Barton is unknown to me in the family. A grandchild perhaps? William was a boatman married to Ann ASPINALL in a non-conformist marriage.

My 2nd ggfather William JOHNSON died quite young at 39 and I wonder if this was related to his job as a boatman. He has been hard to find in censuses probably because of the nature of the job but I know nothing much other than his birth, non-conformist marriage to Ann ASPINALL and death date when residing in Jones Square. I am trying to fill in some gaps, as follows... In 1728 John (??) Rawlinson married Martha Berry at t Mary the Virgin Church Leigh Lancs. Details say Martha was from Boden (?? in Cheshire). In 1790 Martha Rawlinson married Henry Cowburn at the same Church. In 1812 Ellen Cowburn was born father's name given as Henry. What I would Like to find is a connection between these. I.e. was there a son of the 1728 marriage who eventually ties in with Ellen Cowburn. Any help much appreciated.

Trying to trace Sheeley family, originally from Co.Galway, then Leigh Lancashire, Joseph Sheeley married Bridgit Rabbitt in 1902 in Leigh, Bridgit's father was Michael Rabbitt born 1854 Galway. I am trying to find out more information on the family of a James Cheshire Mills (b 1857, Staffs) who lived in Chapel Street Leigh with his wife Ellen Boydell and 3 children Alice Marion, Matthew Henry and Thomas Boydell. In 1901 they also shared there house with a Harry C Hilton who is recorded in the census as a cousin (age 16) and Fanny Shenton a domestic servant (age 22). I believe James was a Clerk in an Iron Foundry. If anybody knows any more information about any of these people or can point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

Thomas Smith owned, jointly with Gamble and Jones, Welch Mill & Brookside Mill, lived in 'The Kirk Hall' which later became the Labour Club in Abbey Street. He had 2 marriages to Jane Hall, and Harriet Calland, and they had about 9 children between them. Does any one have any information or photos of this family,or the Kirk Hall? I understand that Thomas was quite influential in the local community, as were his sons, who became counsellors, and Aldermen.

Mary Jane Plant born in Abram (Ince) Lancs c1892 - later moved to Leigh, Lancs. I am looking for some information on my paternal grandmother, Mary Jane Plant, who married Sydney Priddey around 1933/4ish and later moved to Leigh. (She had previously been married to Tom(?) Bradshaw, who died in WW1, and had Jessie, who died when she was 12.) In the 1901 census, she is living at 186 Warrington Rd, Leigh with her widowed father Joseph Plant, age 41, a miner born in Salop; and siblings Thomas (16), Eliza (13), and Sarah E (10). We think that Mary Jane's mother died in childbirth whilst having her, so that would be about 1892. Any information would be gratefully received. Thanks! Heather
William Aldridge & Esther Chadwick
I am trying to find the ancestors of William Aldridge and Esther Chadwick (my great grandparents), who were living at 9 Wesley Street, Tyldesley, Leigh in the 1901 census, with their children Annie and Frank (Emma, Maggie, Alice, Ethel, Elsie, Jack and Esther folowed in subsequent years) and William's much older sister Hannah Sutton, a widow. Esther Chadwick's parents were Richard and Jane, and are listed in the 1881 census as being at 3 Alexander St, Tyldesley, Leigh with their children Alice, Emma, Charles and Esther. I am struggling to find a Leigh (or nearby)William Aldridge in the 1881 census, but he may have been born in another area. Two possible Chadwick marriages between a Richard and a Jane are listed in 1860 - one was to a Jane Addison in Salford and the other to a Jane Stubbins in Accrington. I don't know if either of these is the right one. I would welcome any contact about these families. Thanks! Heather

My great grandmother Elizabeth BOARDMAN (b.12 Jan 1858) was born in Bedford Leigh. When she was 13 (1871 census) she was already working as a domestic servant for a family called PARTINGTON in Pennington. In 1881 she was still there but this time with a daughter Emma BOARDMAN aged 7. In 1891, Emma appears to have taken the Partington surname and changed to Emily but I can't find any trace of her from then. Elizabeth went on to marry my great grandfather John JONES in 1893. Has anyone got links with these families?

Particularly any descendants of William Clayton b. 1895, a miner, who fought in WW1 and returned home. In 1920, he was living at 7 Arthur Street. Navigation Street was the next-door street - both streets off Twist Lane but Navigation St no longer exists.
