red mail Lincolnshire Dentons in Bootle and Liverpool
William Denton, the son of William and Rose, (nee Coulson), was born in Bardney in Lincolnshire. He was a farm labourer and moved frequently to different jobs in the area. Eventually,he moved to Liverpool with his wife Charlotte, (nee Green), and family . Their children were Elizabeth (1844), William (1845), Stephen (1847), Charlotte(1849), Annie (1854), John (1855) and possibly George, born in 1867 (listed on the 1871 census but possibly a grandchild?). All but the first two were born in Liverpool. John is my direct ancestor, he married Henrietta Ensor (whose family were originally from Dorset). Their children were William, Dorothy, Edward, Frank, Elsie and Stanley. He did well and became manager of a branch of the Midland Bank in Bootle. His eldest sons, William and Edward, emigrated to the USA, possibly following a Great-Uncle Stephen (who was living in Missouri in 1853). They may have been involved in cotton-broking. I think the youngest son, Stanley, worked in this line but from the Liverpool end. The question is, why did the family move from Lincolnshire? Did they all mean to emigrate in the 1840s but ran out of money? I know there were "emigration trains" that ran from Lincolnshire to Liverpool in the 1840s, a time of great hardship for farm labourers. Has anyone further knowledge of this family?
